HONOURING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF PHARMACIST DAVID LUNGU

Today, the Pharmaceutical Society of Zambia joined the family, friends, colleagues, and the wider profession in paying our final respects to Pharmacist David Lungu as he was laid to rest. The burial was marked by deep sorrow, reflection, and heartfelt remembrance of a man whose life, humility, and service touched many within and beyond the pharmacy profession.

The farewell followed an emotional candlelight service held yesterday evening, where members of the profession, family, friends, and loved ones gathered in unity and solemn reflection to honour his memory. As candles illuminated the night, so too did the many heartfelt tributes shared in remembrance of a pharmacist remembered not only for his professionalism, but also for his kindness, mentorship, wisdom, and compassion.

Messages written during the funeral and burial described Mr. Lungu as “a true mentor and counsellor,” “an inspiration to the younger generation of pharmacists,” and “a humble man with a kind heart.” Many remembered his willingness to teach, guide, encourage, and uplift others, while others reflected on the joy and positive influence he brought into their lives and workplaces.

One tribute read:
“We shall always remember David’s kindness and eagerness to teach and elevate others. A true mentor and counsellor.”

Another stated:
“Your valuable legacy shall always live on through us.”

As a profession, we mourn the loss of a gallant pharmacist, colleague, mentor, and friend whose contribution to pharmacy practice and professional development will continue to be remembered for generations to come. Though his passing has left a deep void within the profession, the impact of his life and service will forever remain engraved in the hearts of many.

The Pharmaceutical Society of Zambia extends its deepest condolences to the Lungu family, friends, colleagues, and all members of the profession affected by this loss.

May the soul of Pharmacist David Lungu rest in eternal peace.

“Let Experts Lead”: PSZ Engages Parliament on Key Health Reform Bills

The Pharmaceutical Society of Zambia (PSZ) today appeared before the Parliamentary Committee on Health to present its submissions on several critical Amendment Bills, including ZAMMSA, Medicines and Allied Substances, National Health Research, ZNPHI, and Zambia Flying Doctors.

In its engagement, PSZ emphasized a central message: health institutions must be governed by the right technical expertise. The Society cautioned that reducing the presence of professionals in pharmacy and related fields risks weakening decision-making in areas such as medicines regulation, procurement, and public health response.

PSZ highlighted that medicines are not ordinary commodities and require specialized oversight to ensure safety, quality, and effectiveness. The Society further stressed the need to align ongoing reforms with Zambia’s broader goals of strengthening healthcare systems, advancing research, and supporting local pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Practical recommendations were made to ensure that governance structures across the institutions remain balanced, technically sound, and responsive to the needs of the health sector.

PSZ reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Government and stakeholders in building a stronger, safer, and more effective health system for all Zambians.
