🚢⚠️ WHO is monitoring a cluster of severe illness linked to a cruise ship carrying 147 passengers and crew.

*So far:*

🦠 7 cases identified (2 confirmed hantavirus infections)
⚫️ 3 deaths
🏥 1 person in intensive care

🐀 Hantavirus is a rare but serious disease usually spread through contact with infected rodent urine, saliva or droppings — not through casual everyday contact.

*Symptoms can include:*

🤒 fever
🤢 nausea or diarrhoea
😮‍💨 breathing difficulties
🫁 pneumonia-like illness

*The good news:*

🌍 WHO currently assesses the risk to the global public as low.
✈️ No travel restrictions are recommended.

*Health teams are working across several countries to:*

✔️ test patients
✔️ trace contacts
✔️ isolate suspected cases
✔️ provide medical care

*Practical tips:*

🧼 Wash hands regularly
🐭 Avoid contact with rodents or rodent waste
🌬️ Ensure good ventilation in enclosed spaces
😷 If sick with respiratory symptoms, isolate and seek care early

Most travel remains very low risk. WHO continues to closely monitor the situation.

After the official launch, the first round of Zambia’s national polio vaccination campaign is now underway in Lusaka—an important step toward ending polio, led by Government together with UNICEF, World Health Organization (WHO), and Rotary International.

• 🗓️ Period: 20 to 23 April 2026
• 📍 Locations: Central, Eastern, Lusaka, Muchinga, Southern, and Western provinces
• 👶 Target: The campaign aims to reach all children under five

📍 In Chawama compound, Lusaka, this effort is led by extraordinary individuals—polio survivors who now serve as social mobilisers.

Starting their day at Chawama Level 1 Hospital, they head into the community—speaking with families, listening to their concerns, and encouraging every caregiver to vaccinate their child.

They understand the lifelong impact of polio. That’s why they are determined to ensure no child is left behind.

Together, we can end polio.
