HAPPY AFRICAN FREEDOM DAY | 25th May 2026 🌍

On this day, we celebrate not just political liberation β€” but the ongoing fight for a freedom that millions across Africa are still denied: the freedom to see.

Across Africa, avoidable and preventable blindness continues to rob individuals of their dignity, children of their education, and communities of their potential. This must change.

The Zambia Ophthalmological Society stands with eye health workers across the continent β€” our Zambian Eye Health Soldiers β€” who show up every day in clinics, theatres, and communities, armed with skill, compassion, and an unshakeable commitment to this mission.

πŸ”΄ We screen. We detect. We save sight.
🟑 Every eye counts.
🟒 Together, we can end avoidable blindness.
Africa is strong. Africa is resilient. Africa will see.

πŸ‘Š Join the fight. Earn more freedom from blindness.

Let freedom from blindness be our legacy.

A MILESTONE DAY FOR ZAMBIAN OPHTHALMOLOGY

At the just-ended University of Zambia graduation ceremony, the Zambia Ophthalmological Society celebrates THREE of our colleagues who have graduated as fully qualified Ophthalmologists β€” a proud and significant day for eye care in our country and the region.

Please join us in congratulating:

✨ Dr. Angela Chibwe β€” also Lieutenant Colonel with the Zambia National Service. A remarkable journey of service in both medicine and the uniform.

✨ Dr. Manyara β€” based at Zimba Mission Hospital, where she will now strengthen ophthalmic services in the Southern Province and surrounding catchment.

✨ Dr. Emmanuel Yungu β€” based in Eastern DRC, extending the reach of regional ophthalmology training across the border and into a community that desperately needs more eye-care specialists.

Each of these colleagues adds to the steadily growing community of ophthalmologists serving Zambia and the wider region. Every new specialist trained is another set of skilled hands fighting avoidable blindness, restoring sight, and bringing eye care closer to communities that have waited far too long for it.

To every supervisor, mentor, family member, colleague, training institution, and partner organisation that made this journey possible β€” thank you. Behind every new ophthalmologist stands a community of people who quietly carried part of the load. Today we honour you too. πŸ™

To Dr. Chibwe, Dr. Manyara, and Dr. Yungu β€” the Society salutes you. πŸŽ‰ The work ahead is significant, the need is great, and we have no doubt you are ready.

Please share this post to celebrate our newest colleagues with us. πŸ™Œ

TEAM SPOTLIGHT: Celebrating Innovation in Eye Care β€” Aubrey Matende

What happens when software engineering meets ophthalmology?
The seismic wave is supercharged β€” and that wave has just started.
Meet Aubrey Matende, a Computer Science graduate of the Copperbelt University and the software engineer driving digital transformation at Lusaka Eye Hospital. Aubrey specialises in engineering targeted software and AI integrations that enhance ophthalmic workflows and accelerate data-driven decision-making across our eye-care system.

The Zambia Ophthalmological Society has benefited enormously from Aubrey’s talent and dedication. He has single-handedly designed, built, and developed a robust new website for the Society β€” a digital home where members, partners, patients, and the public can find what is happening in Zambian eye health, all in one place.

Today we want to publicly celebrate and appreciate what Aubrey has contributed to ophthalmology in Zambia. His work is not abstract β€” every line of code he writes contributes, in some small way, to the ZOS mission of fighting avoidable and unnecessary blindness in our country.

Please share this post to help us appreciate Aubrey's contribution to eye healthcare in Zambia.

Thank you, Aubrey Matende. πŸ™
