COURTESY VISIT BY THE NATIONAL HEART HOSPITAL TO ZFDS⭐️

Today, a delegation from the National Heart Hospital(NHH) paid a courtesy visit to the Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) team, marking a significant step toward strengthening collaboration in healthcare delivery.

The visiting team, led by NHH Senior Medical Superintendent, Dr. Chakwela Shumba, in the company of Dr. Agness Mtaja NHH Head Clinical Care, Mr James Titus Mtonga NHH Partnership Coordinator, Dr James Wilentz Board Chairperson International Cardiac Alliance and Mr Owen Robinson CEO International Cardiac Alliance was warmly received by ZFDS management and medical staff led by the Chief Executive Officer, Dr. George Ng’uni. The purpose of the visit was to foster closer ties between the two institutions, explore areas of cooperation, and appreciate the vital role ZFDS plays in providing emergency medical evacuations across Zambia.

During the engagement, ZFDS gave a detailed presentation on their operations, highlighting their work in fulfilling their mandate and conducting evacuations from remote areas to specialized facilities in urban centers.

The NHH team commended ZFDS’s commitment and resilience, particularly in handling complex cases that require urgent interventions, including cardiac emergencies. They noted that timely evacuations often make the difference between life and death, especially for patients requiring specialized heart care.

Discussions between the two institutions centered on enhancing referral systems, improving coordination during cardiac emergencies, and exploring opportunities for joint medical outreaches. Both parties acknowledged that collaboration would ensure faster, more efficient care for patients suffering from heart conditions, particularly those in rural areas.

The courtesy visit ended on a positive note, with a shared vision of improving access to specialized cardiac care and saving more lives through strategic partnership.

At ZFDS, we continue to reaffirm our commitment to working together to strengthen Zambia’s healthcare system.

ZFDS CONDUCTS EMERGENCY EVACUATION TO SAVE BRAIN INJURY PATIENT ⭐️

A 45-year-old man with a life-threatening brain injury was successfully evacuated from Solwezi to Maina Soko Military Hospital for urgent neurosurgical intervention.

The Zambia Flying Doctor Service carried out the emergency evacuation on Thursday morning, 9th April 2026, ensuring the patient arrived in Lusaka within hours.

Medical scans revealed that the patient had an acute subdural haematoma, a critical condition involving a blood clot exerting pressure on the brain, requiring specialised surgical care not available at Solwezi General Hospital.

Dr. Joshua Chisanga, Senior Medical Superintendent at Solwezi General Hospital, promptly submitted an urgent request to the Ministry of Health Zambia for aeromedical evacuation.

The aircraft departed Ndola at 07:49 hours and arrived in Solwezi approximately one hour later to retrieve the patient.

ZFDS EVACUATES POSTPARTUM MOTHER IN URGENT CARDIAC EMERGENCY ⭐️

The Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) successfully conducted an emergency medical evacuation of a 30-year-old woman, just two days postpartum, who developed life-threatening cardiac complications.

The patient was diagnosed with severe mitral stenosis,a critical narrowing of a heart valve that restricts blood flow, and a suspected left atrial thrombus, a potentially fatal blood clot within the heart.

Her condition was critical, marked by persistently low blood pressure despite ongoing medical intervention. The evacuation was requested by Dr. Kalombo Mwatu, Head of Emergency and Critical Care at Solwezi General Hospital, through the Ministry of Health. She was referred from Solwezi General Hospital to the National Heart Hospital in Lusaka for specialized cardiology care unavailable at the referring facility.

Despite her fragile state, the patient remained conscious and responsive. Oxygen therapy was initiated to support her breathing as the medical team urgently prepared her for evacuation.

ZFDS promptly coordinated the mission. Aircraft 9J-AGC, piloted by Siphosami Zulu with co-pilot Elvis Kite and paramedic Suzen Banda on board, departed Ndola at 08:36 and arrived in Solwezi at 09:37. After stabilisation and boarding, the aircraft departed at 10:34 and landed safely at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka at 12:05, where an ambulance was on standby to transfer the patient to the National Heart Hospital.

This mission underscores the critical importance of rapid response, coordination, and access to specialized healthcare, especially in life-threatening emergencies.

ZFDS remains committed to bridging the gap in emergency healthcare delivery, bringing hope and life-saving services to those in need.
