Flying high and raising standards for Midwifery education, our own Dr K Dube
Champion of Lifelong Learning in Midwifery
In the busy corridors of Mpilo Central Hospital, one face stands out—not just for her experience, but for her relentless commitment to learning and teaching. Dr. Kushupika Dube, Principal Tutor at the Mpilo School of Midwifery, has become a champion of e-learning in midwifery, showing how modern technology and traditional healthcare can work hand-in-hand to save lives.
“My journey started with a passion for mothers,” she says. “I come from rural areas, and I’ve seen women and babies lose their lives because there was no one to assist them. I knew I could do something to make a difference.”
Since starting as a tutor in 2005 and being promoted to Principal Tutor in 2012, Dr. Dube has continuously sought ways to improve teaching, empower students, and enhance maternal care.
The e-learning platform, introduced at Mpilo in 2024, allows students to log in from home, watch instructional videos, and review practical procedures before clinical practice. Further, this approach has transformed learning by helping students visualize emergency procedures before practicing them in real life, enabled self-paced learning thereby boosting confidence and competence.
“Even with limited laptops and intermittent Wi-Fi, the platform has allowed tutors and students to engage actively and learn continuously,” Dr. Dube explains. “We’ve seen students locally and globally successfully complete training and manage real-life emergencies confidently.”
Students report transformative results. Nkosinathi Ndlovu said.
“Before e-learning, I would stay back and let others handle complicated deliveries. Now, I feel confident. I can save a life, handle emergencies, and assist mothers safely from start to finish.”
Similarly, Chakwizira Ronald, a male student midwife, shared.
“This course empowers me to confidently assist communities and fulfil my purpose—ensuring mothers deliver safely and go home healthy.”
Dr. Dube’s vision extends nationwide. She advocates for expanded digital training, improved connectivity, and sustained support from partners such as the Health Resilient Fund.
“This platform is a strategic tool in reducing maternal and newborn mortality. With continued investment and support, we can build first-class midwifery practice in Zimbabwe and ensure that every mother and child receives quality care.”
For Dr. Dube, midwifery is more than a profession—it is a lifelong commitment to learning, teaching, and saving lives. Her story embodies passion, innovation, and the transformative power of education and technology in healthcare.
