At the ZSOG–ECSACOG Joint Annual Scientific Conference at HICC, Harare, our Fetal Medicine team hosted a breakout session on fetal growth assessment, combining focused teaching with live scanning demonstrations and guided hands-on practice.

The session covered the full clinical pathway:

• Dr Cladious Verenga – principles and clinical importance of fetal growth assessment.
• Dr Ndagurwa – accurate pregnancy dating, the foundation for interpreting fetal size and growth.
• Mr A. Zanga – standardised fetal biometry and obstetric Doppler assessment.
• Dr Hlatywayo – diagnosis, surveillance and management of fetal growth restriction.

During the live fetal Doppler demonstrations, participants engaged directly with scanning, image acquisition, waveform optimisation and clinical interpretation. Two ultrasound machines enabled close interaction between participants and trainers.

We sincerely appreciate:

• KDB Healthcare, in partnership with Mindray, for providing one of the machines used during the practical demonstrations.
• The Fetal Medicine Unit at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital for providing the GE Voluson S10 used at the second scanning station.
• Fetal Medicine Foundation Zimbabwe for providing the trainers who guided participants throughout the clinical demonstrations.

This collaboration shows what effective capacity-building looks like: professional societies creating the learning platform, public institutions sharing resources, partners widening access to technology, and local trainers transferring practical skills within our clinical context.

This is how we standardise care, strengthen locally owned fetal medicine systems and move closer to zero preventable maternal and perinatal deaths.

Thank you to ZSOG, ECSACOG and all participants for making the session a success.
