You can contract an STI by having unprotected va**nal, a**l, or oral s*x with someone who has the STI.That doesnโt mean s*x is the only way STIs are transmitted. Depending on the specific STI, infections may also be transmitted through sharing needles, skin-to-skin contact, during birth and breastfeeding.

Anyone who is s*xually active is at risk for an STI, regardless of gender, race, social class or s*xual orientation. That said, teenagers and young adults acquire STIs more easily than older people. By age 25, half of s*xually active adults get an STI.
Having multiple s*x partners also raises the risk.

Yes, they can. Many STIs spread through any type of s*xual activity, including skin-to-skin contact and oral s*x. This is especially true of STIs that produce ge***al lesions or sores. Vaginal and a**l s*x arenโt the only way STIs are transmitted. Itโs also possible to contract or transmit an STI through oral s*x. In other words, STIs can be passed from one personโs ge***als to another personโs mouth or throat and vice versa. Oral STIs arenโt always noticeable. When they do cause symptoms, they often include a sore throat or sores around the mouth or throat.

When used properly, condoms provide effective protection against many STIs.
Condoms are generally effective at preventing STIs that spread through fluids, such as semen or blood. But they canโt fully protect against STIs that spread from skin to skin. If your condom doesnโt cover the infected area of skin, you can still contract an STI or pass it to your partner.
Condoms can help protect against not only STIs, but also unwanted pregnancy. In contrast, many other types of birth control lower the risk of unwanted pregnancy but not STIs. For example, the following forms of birth control donโt protect against STIs: birth control pills, birth control shots, birth control implants, intra uterine devices (IUDs)
Regular STI screening is a good idea for anyone whoโs s*xually active. Itโs particularly important for those with a new partner or multiple partners. Early diagnosis and treatment can help stop the spread of infections. Since STIs often have no symptoms, testing is the only way to know for sure if you have one. If your partner tests positive for an STI, itโs important for them to follow their healthcare providerโs recommended treatment plan.
You can also ask your healthcare provider about strategies to protect yourself from contracting the STI from your partner. For example, if your partner has HIV, your doctor or healthcare provider will likely encourage you to take pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).
