If you’re in your 40s or 50s and your sleep has suddenly become lighter, more disrupted, or filled with middle-of-the-night wake-ups, there may several changes can happen at the same time:

1. Estrogen and progesterone - two sisters - greatly fluctuate during perimenopause
2. Hot flushes & night sweats - vasomotor symptoms
3. Changes in your circadian rhythm, and
4. Melatonin shift regulation

The good news: understanding why your sleep is changing is the first step toward improving it.

Poor sleep is not “just” about sleep or feeling tired the next day.

When sleep problems become chronic, they can affect your heart, metabolism, immune system, mood, memory, and hormonal health.

In menopause, changing hormones make sleep even more challenging.

A 2025 meta-analysis of 79 studies involving more than 2.1 million people found that sleeping less than 7 hours was associated with a higher risk of all-cause mortality compared with sleeping 7–8 hours.

Don’t simply accept poor sleep - it is an important part of your overall health.

Poor sleep is not normal poor sleep and we must NOT push through the day feeling exhausted, irritable and unable to concentrate.

Waking up at 3am again?

You are in your 40s or 50s and your sleep has suddenly changed, it may not be “just stress” — hormonal changes during perimenopause can play a role too.

Night waking, waking at the same time each night, struggling to fall back asleep, waking earlier than usual, night sweats or feeling suddenly hot, and feeling exhausted despite a full night in bed can all be signs worth paying attention to.

You don’t have to simply accept broken sleep as part of getting older.
