National Carers Week is about making visible the care that so often happens quietly, every day.

We see that in our own community and networks: family members, partners, friends and others providing unpaid care alongside work, family life and their own day-to-day responsibilities.

Caring looks different for everyone. It might involve appointments, transport, advocacy, routines, practical help, reassurance, or simply being there when someone needs you.

Much of that care happens behind the scenes, and it can ask a lot of the person providing it.

This week, we’re recognising carers in our community and across Australia, not only for the support they provide, but as people whose own wellbeing, needs and lives matter too.

Because you matter.

The little things are often the big things.

A piece of art taking shape.
A morning at bowling.
Dog training.
Preparing something in the kitchen.
Working through a project from start to finish.

They can look like ordinary moments, but for the person involved they can mean confidence, independence, connection, achievement, or simply the enjoyment of doing something that matters to them.

That’s why support needs to be personal. Good support starts with the person, their interests, their goals, their choices and what matters in their everyday life.

Here are a few moments from recent months that show what that can look like.

Mental health doesn’t always look like struggle.

Someone can be working, studying, spending time with family and friends, caring for others and managing everyday responsibilities, while still finding things difficult.

What we see on the outside does not always tell us how much effort something is taking, or what someone may be dealing with behind the scenes.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, it’s a reminder not to make assumptions about how someone is coping, and to make space for conversations when they’re needed.

Because you matter.

1–7 October is BPD Awareness Week.

This year’s theme, “Connection Changes Outcomes: In BPD, Every Interaction Matters,” highlights the importance of the everyday interactions we have with one another.

For people living with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), being treated with respect, listened to without judgement and having experiences acknowledged can matter. Respectful, validating and consistent interactions can contribute to a greater sense of trust, safety and connection.

BPD is often misunderstood and can be highly stigmatised. It is also experienced differently from person to person. A diagnosis is only one part of someone’s story, each person has their own experiences, strengths, needs and goals.

These principles also reflect the way we approach support at RC Support Services: person-centred, respectful and grounded in genuine human connection.

A little support for Bella

Someone in our RC Supports community has a much-loved companion, Bella, who needs surgery.

With permission, we’re sharing Bella’s GoFundMe in the hope her story might reach a few more people.

If you’d like to support Bella, you can donate through the link below. A share can help too.

We’re hoping Bella is back on all four paws very soon.

Spring can be a good time for a fresh start at home.

For some people, cleaning, sorting and decluttering can quickly become overwhelming. Having someone alongside you can make it feel much more manageable.

Our team can help with things like decluttering, organising cupboards and storage, tidying everyday spaces and resetting areas of the home in a way that works for you.

There’s no pressure to do everything at once. Sometimes starting with one cupboard, one room, or one small area is enough.

Want to know more about our cleaning and decluttering support? Comment below, send us a message, or email [email protected].

Today is R U OK? Day, a reminder that checking in can matter more than we sometimes realise.

For people living with disability, support can come from many places. Family, friends, carers, support workers, support coordinators, allied health professionals and others may all form part of a person’s wider support network.

Sometimes the most important thing we can do is notice when someone seems a little quieter, overwhelmed, withdrawn or simply not themselves, and take the time to ask, “Are you OK?”

You don’t need to have all the answers. Listening without judgement, giving someone space to talk and helping them connect with the right support can make a real difference.

While today is R U OK? Day, meaningful check-ins should not be limited to one day of the year.

Keep asking. Keep listening. Keep looking out for the people around you.

Because you matter.
