Should you have handrails if your ramp has kerbing? Yes, kerbing on its own isn’t enough.

It stops a wheel rolling off the edge, but it does nothing for a persons balance. If kerbing is going on a ramp, handrails should be specified alongside it, not left as an afterthought.

Tyrex kerbing comes standard in black, or can be painted (like in photo 2) if the site calls for it.

Save this for the next time someone’s specifying a ramp with kerbing and no rails.

Newcastle Men’s Shed looked at the their own space last year and asked a simple question: who can’t get in here right now?

Then made sure the answer was nobody.

Sometimes it’s not a big step causing the problem, it’s a few centimetres.

This threshold was small, but it was enough to catch a wheel, a walker, or a foot every time. A small Tyrex ramp bridged the gap, no major modifications required.

A few millimetres out doesn’t sound like much, but on a ramp, it can mean the height ends up wrong, leaving a trip hazard right where you were trying to remove one.

A combination square helps you avoid that. It locks a straight, square edge, so you’re not trying to judge a straight line by eye with just a tape measure. Small tool, but it removes one of the easiest mistakes to make on site.

If you’re only using a tape measure right now, this is worth adding to the kit.

Someone’s in there with a trowel for every single ramp, working the rubber mix in by hand.

Not all ramps are about getting into a home, some are about staying dry once you’re there.

When a shower hob is removed for step-free access, water needs somewhere to go. This Tyrex shower ramp follows the exact shape of the shower area, keeping the area accessible while containing the water where it belongs, no lip to trip on, no pooling where it shouldn’t be.

Small detail, but it’s the difference between an accessible shower and a wet floor every time.
