The Nurses in Action Program, operated by World Youth International, has been running since 2013 and provides skilled overseas volunteer opportunities for health professionals. Volunteers on the NIA program will learn about healthcare practices in a developing country and help to build local capacity in improving health services and outcomes to rural communities.

Team Leaders needed for Kenya 2026 programs - could one be you?

If you've been on one of our Nurses in Action programs in Kenya before, this one's for you.

We're looking for Team Leaders for our 2026 NIA Kenya programs and we're hoping it's someone who's already joined us before. Someone who knows what it feels like to land in Kenya for the first time, to work alongside our local teams, and to leave changed by it. Someone ready to be the person who helps the next group feel that too.

This isn't about starting from scratch. You already understand what NIA is about - the work, the community, the way this experience stays with you long after you're home. Now it's about stepping into a new role within something you already know and love.

What we're looking for:
A responsible, mature, resilient and flexible person who's passionate about supporting both their team and the communities we work with. Someone professional under pressure, but warm enough to be the steady presence a group needs when things get hard, tiring, or emotional, because on programs like this, they sometimes do.

What's involved:
Your expenses are covered by WYI. The main task is having leave from work to go. And ideally, we're hoping to find someone who can take on back-to-back programs. Comprehensive training and full support before and during the program - you won't be thrown in unprepared.

Am I too old? Am I not experienced enough? Am I not 'the right fit'? We get these types of questions a lot - different versions of the same worry.

If you're a nurse or allied health professional, you're the right fit. That's genuinely it. We've had volunteers in their early 20s, fresh out of study, and volunteers in their 50s who've been practising for decades. We've had people who've never left the country before, and people who've done this kind of thing a dozen times.

What actually matters isn't your age, your years of experience, or how senior you are on paper. It's whether you're willing to show up, work alongside people who need you, and stay open to a place that might look nothing like what you're used to.

If that's you, you're already the right fit. The rest, you figure out once you're there.

If you've been wanting to do something meaningful this year, there's still time! There are still limited spots open on our November Nurses in Action program in Kenya and we're offering $300 off the program fee for anyone who books in before the program starts (from bookings made from July 31).*

You'll spend four weeks working alongside the local healthcare teams that we've partnered with for years, in communities where even the most basic healthcare is needed most. You might be running a clinic day, checking on a newborn, or just sitting with someone who's been waiting a long time for someone to look after them properly. It adds up in ways you'll still be thinking about long after you're home.

This Men's Health Week, we want to take a moment for the male nurses in our profession.

You are 12% of the nursing workforce in Australia (AHPRA data), and just under 11% globally. A small but vital part of a profession built on care.

You show up for your patients. You hold space for the worst moments of strangers' lives. You give knowledge, time, energy - over and over again.

The reminder this Men's Health Week is gentle and simple. Whatever you give your patients, give a little of it back to yourself this week. See your GP. Have the check, the conversation, the moment that you would absolutely encourage anyone else to have.

In global health, some of the most significant outcomes come from the simplest interventions. Hygiene education is one of them.

When our Nurses In Action volunteers deliver community health education sessions across Nepal and Kenya, we are doing more than sharing information - we are transferring knowledge that continues to protect communities long after the program has ended.

The evidence behind this approach is well established. Proper hand washing alone is among the most effective and affordable public health interventions available, significantly reducing the transmission of infectious disease - particularly among children under five.

A handwashing session in a small village may seem like a small act. But across families, across generations, across entire communities, it is one of the most powerful things a nurse can do. This is our work. This is our mission. And the impact will outlast every program.

POV: You used your annual leave to show up for an entire community in Kenya who needed your skills — and you’ve never felt more like a nurse.

Our Nurses In Action team is currently on the ground in Kenya, and after just one week, the impact is already being felt. Every morning they head out ready to show up for whoever needs them — and every evening they come back knowing exactly why they do this work.

We are so incredibly proud of every single one of them.

This National Volunteers Week, we want to acknolwedge the people who make the work of World Youth International and Nurses In Action possible - our extraordinary volunteers.

From the nurses and midwives who pack their bags and travel to Nepal, Kenya and Uganda to deliver hands-on healthcare in communities that need it most - to the corporate partners, supporters and advocates who give their time, skills and resources to ensure children have access to education and opportunity.

Volunteering looks different for everyone. But the thread that connects every single person who chooses to give is the same - a belief that their contribution matters. That they can be part of something bigger than themselves. And they are right.

There are people in this world who choose, every single day, to show up for others. Who walk toward the hard moments, not away from them. Nurses - this one is for you.

Today we celebrated International Nurses Day and we want to do more than recognise what you do. We want to honour who you are.

You are the people who stay when things get hard. Who holds a hand when words aren’t enough. Who carries clinical knowledge in your head and deep humanity in your heart - and brings both to every patient, every single day.

This year’s theme from the International Council of Nurses says it perfectly: Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives.

Because when nurses have safe working conditions, fair pay and a real voice, patients live, communities heal and health systems hold. Investing in nurses is investing in all of us.

At Nurses In Action, we see this every day, in health camps and care across Nepal, Kenya and Uganda, where our nurses show up fully for the people who need them most.

To every nurse reading this - you are seen, you are valued, and the world is better because you are in it. 🩺💙

Today is International Day of the Midwife, and this year's theme is one we believe in deeply: One Million More Midwives.

To us, this is not just a slogan. It is a shared demand, grounded in evidence and driven by the realities that midwives, and the women they care for, face every single day.

Behind every statistic is a mother. A family. A community holding its breath.

In 2023 alone, an estimated 160,000 women died from preventable maternal causes in fragile and conflict-affected settings... that is 6 in 10 maternal deaths worldwide, despite these countries accounting for only around one in ten of global live births.

Six in ten. In settings where health systems are already stretched thin. Where skilled care before, during and after birth is disrupted or simply out of reach. These are not inevitable losses. They are preventable, and midwives are central to the solution.

Midwives could provide around 90% of essential sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn and adolescent health services. Yet in the communities that need them most, they are too often absent, unsupported, or not enabled to work to their full scope of practice. And, that has to change.

When midwives are educated to international standards, fairly paid, properly regulated and truly integrated into health systems, outcomes improve. Maternal deaths decrease. Care becomes more accessible, more respectful, and more consistent. Investing in midwives is one of the smartest, and most human, investments a health system can make.

This is why our Nurses In Action midwife volunteers show up in Nepal, Kenya and Uganda, sitting alongside local health workers, supporting mothers, and showing up for communities where skilled midwifery care is limited. It is a small part of a much larger picture. But every woman who receives skilled, compassionate care during pregnancy and birth matters. Every single one.

Today, the world is already listening. It is our moment to speak clearly, together, about what must change. The world needs one million more midwives.
