The Nurses in Action Program, operated by World Youth International, has been running since 2013 and provides skilled overseas volunteer opportunities for health professionals. Volunteers on the NIA program will learn about healthcare practices in a developing country and help to build local capacity in improving health services and outcomes to rural communities.

Our Annapurna screening clinic was a big day for our team of volunteers. The clinic gave people in the region a chance to be seen by a nurse, many of them for the first time in a long while. That happened because our volunteers showed up and gave every person the time they deserved. We’re so proud of them, and so grateful.

And of course, every one of them did it in Scrub Lab | Medical Apparel scrubs.

Scrub Lab supplies scrubs for every nurse on every one of our programs, and we don’t think they always hear how far those scrubs travel. They get packed in a suitcase in Australia. They make the long journey to Nepal. And then they’re worn through the clinic, seeing one patient after another, not just in Nepal but for our programs in Kenya too.

Scrub Lab’s support means a lot to us at WYI and NIA, and just as much to our volunteers. Wearing the same scrubs turns a group of individuals into a team from day one, and being comfortable means they can focus completely on the person in front of them.

For a lot of people in rural Nepal, a health camp is the only time they’ll have the opportunity to see a nurse this year.

For many local who visited our recent health camp, it was a chance to be seen and have a wound treated, a health check, receive medication they needed and more. But treatment isn’t the only thing people take home. Being asked how you’re feeling, and having someone stop and listen to the answer, matters just as much. For someone who’s spent a long time going without care, that can be the first time in a long while they’ve felt heard and seen.

The need for this type of care is real. There are too few trained health workers and too few well-equipped clinics for the people who depend on them, so when a camp finishes, the line doesn’t. There are always more people waiting. And, that’s why we keep going back.

It's World Mental Health Day, and this year's Mental Health Month theme is Together We Thrive.

Swipe through and see if any of these sound familiar. The replayed handover, the skipped break, being the calm one in the room, the shift that won't switch off. Most nurses carry some version of it, and most of us carry it quietly.

Nobody is meant to do that alone. The people who understand it best are usually the ones working beside you, so check in on a colleague today. And if you're the one who's been running on empty, let someone check in on you.

One day. Endless possibilities.

It might be a health camp - screening, treating, following up with people who’ve been waiting a long time to be seen. It might be an education session, sharing knowledge that sticks long after you’ve gone home. It might be community outreach - just showing up, being present, meeting people where they are.

The setting changes. What doesn’t is the reason you’re there, helping people who need it, alongside a team of like-minded people who get it without you having to explain.

That’s a day in the life on an NIA program. Every version of it.

If you’ve been waiting for the right moment to say yes to Nepal or Kenya, this is it - consider this your sign to apply for our 2027 programs!

Imagine yourself running a health check on a newborn in a rural clinic. Treating a wound that’s gone untreated far longer than it should have. Supporting a local nurse through a busy clinic day, or helping a mother understand how to care for her child long after you’ve gone home. Sitting with someone who’s simply glad someone finally has time to listen.

This is what our Nurses in Action programs actually look like, real, hands-on healthcare work alongside communities who’ve welcomed our teams for years, whether that’s a 2-week placement or a longer stay - we’d love to have you join us!

It's with heavy hearts that we share the news that Lucy Bowden, a past Nurses In Action volunteer, has passed away.

Lucy was an extremely special person, and everyone who met her felt it. She had a rare gift for genuine connection, she made friendships with everyone on her program, and all of us who knew her are better for having shared that experience with her.

Children were naturally drawn to her energy. Those who travelled with her remember walking through the village and hearing kids calling her name from their houses before running out to greet her, a small but beautiful reflection of the impact she had, even in a short time.

Lucy was also a lover of animals, especially dogs. During her time in Kenya, she and the group befriended a local dog they named Rocky, and before she left, Lucy made sure he was looked after, spending a morning giving him tick treatment she'd bought from the markets herself.

Even while facing uncertainty with her own health, Lucy remained happy and grateful for the chance to go to Kenya and help others. She was deeply proud of that experience.

We'll always remember Lucy for the light she brought into the lives of everyone around her, and we're grateful we got to know her.

From all of us at World Youth International and Nurses in Action, thank you, Lucy, for the joy, warmth and heart you brought to our program and everyone in it. We feel privileged to have had you as part of our community, and you'll be held in our hearts always 💙

Team Leaders needed for Kenya 2026 programs - could one be you?

If you've been on one of our Nurses in Action programs in Kenya before, this one's for you.

We're looking for Team Leaders for our 2026 NIA Kenya programs and we're hoping it's someone who's already joined us before. Someone who knows what it feels like to land in Kenya for the first time, to work alongside our local teams, and to leave changed by it. Someone ready to be the person who helps the next group feel that too.

This isn't about starting from scratch. You already understand what NIA is about - the work, the community, the way this experience stays with you long after you're home. Now it's about stepping into a new role within something you already know and love.

What we're looking for:
A responsible, mature, resilient and flexible person who's passionate about supporting both their team and the communities we work with. Someone professional under pressure, but warm enough to be the steady presence a group needs when things get hard, tiring, or emotional, because on programs like this, they sometimes do.

What's involved:
Your expenses are covered by WYI. The main task is having leave from work to go. And ideally, we're hoping to find someone who can take on back-to-back programs. Comprehensive training and full support before and during the program - you won't be thrown in unprepared.

If you've ever thought about going back to Kenya, or wondered what it would look like to take the next step with WYI, this might be exactly that moment.

Am I too old? Am I not experienced enough? Am I not 'the right fit'? We get these types of questions a lot - different versions of the same worry.

If you're a nurse or allied health professional, you're the right fit. That's genuinely it. We've had volunteers in their early 20s, fresh out of study, and volunteers in their 50s who've been practising for decades. We've had people who've never left the country before, and people who've done this kind of thing a dozen times.

What actually matters isn't your age, your years of experience, or how senior you are on paper. It's whether you're willing to show up, work alongside people who need you, and stay open to a place that might look nothing like what you're used to.

If that's you, you're already the right fit. The rest, you figure out once you're there.

You'll spend four weeks working alongside the local healthcare teams that we've partnered with for years, in communities where even the most basic healthcare is needed most. They've arrived! Our latest group of NIA volunteers have officially touched down in Kenya - bags unpacked, kits ready, hearts open to whatever the next few weeks have in store.

There is always something special about this moment. The travel is done. The orientation is starting. The work, the people, the memories that will stay with them forever... all of it is just beginning.
