Sometimes, when someone hurts you or someone you love, and wonโt own it, the most spiritual thing you can do is forgive them.
You see beyond their behaviour to the wounded human being underneath.
You see the frightened child in them, the old pain they never learned how to hold, the wounds they never healed, the shame they learned to hide, the armour they had to build to survive.
You see how they may be acting out patterns that began long before you arrived. You see how unconscious they may be of what drives them, how trapped they may be in their own history, how their cruelty may be pain that has never found another outlet. You see the mask they wear, and the fear beneath the mask. You see how the defences that once protected them may now be hurting the people they love the most. You see that, in some strange and mysterious sense, perhaps they could not have been any different in that moment. Perhaps, with the awareness they had, with their conditioning and genes and life circumstances, they simply could not see what they were doing. Perhaps, beneath all their defences, they never consciously meant to hurt you.
Andโฆ
Sometimes, the most spiritual thing you can do is tell them to f**k right off, and walk away.

You see, wisdom is knowing when forgiveness means opening your heartโฆ and when it means closing the door.
And when, with love and grief and no easy answers at all, it means doing both these things at once.
