Alicia had the chance to visit The Niagara Apothecary in Niagara-on-the-lake this summer.

An active pharmacy for more than a century (1820–1964), the space is now a beautifully restored museum showcasing an 1869 pharmacy. It is a National Historic Site of Canada, owned by the Ontario Heritage Trust and operated by the Ontario College of Pharmacists.

Here’s a peek at some of the fun finds behind the apothecary doors:

⚕️ International symbols of pharmacy, used at different points in history and in different parts of the world.

🔍 Speculation about the origins of the universal “Rx” prescription symbol.

⚖️ An analytical balance used to measure active pharmaceutical ingredients and chemical excipients with incredible precision.

“Hi everyone!

My name is Taylor. I’m a new pharmacist at Teasdale’s and I just graduated from Dalhousie! I had the pleasure of working here last summer, and now I’m lucky enough to work here again :)

I grew up in Antigonish and took a degree in biology before going to Dal for pharmacy. I’ve always loved Antigonish and it’s so nice to be back!

When I’m not at work, I love spending time with my friends and family, in Antigonish and Halifax both. I’ve got two pets that I adore and spoil rotten, and I also love to read, bake, go to the beach, and travel— but most of all I love to try new things! I’m always working on little passion projects and finding something new to do.
