We’re celebrating 20 years of supporting primary care in our community! Since our start in August 2006 with about 60 family doctors in our membership, we've grown alongside our membership, teams, and partners to support better care for patients in our community.

To mark this major milestone — our 20th anniversary — we've created a digital timeline highlighting two decades of growth, innovation, and collaboration. From getting established in our early days to building on our foundation and continuously enhancing our support for doctors and patients, the timeline tells the story of our development and contributions to primary care.

As we look back with gratitude, we're also looking ahead. Primary care continues to evolve, and we're committed to supporting family doctors and strengthening patient care in the years ahead.

This National Indigenous Peoples Day, we are reflecting on the opportunities we’ve had throughout the year to strengthen our understanding and connection with our Indigenous community members.

This October, our team members attended the Calgary Zone Truth and Reconciliation Event, which provided valuable insights into Indigenous history, culture, and knowledge in a primary care context.

Using information shared by community Elders and Knowledge Keepers, participants brainstormed actionable ways to enhance our support for Indigenous patients.

Learning and collaboration opportunities like this allow us to meaningfully address the systemic barriers faced by Indigenous Peoples and become allies in developing safe, inclusive programs and services.

On this day and all days, we celebrate the traditions, cultures, and contributions of Indigenous Peoples and will continue to foster connection and collaboration through shared understanding.

June is National Indigenous History Month. We also celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day annually on June 21. A time to learn, reflect and celebrate the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.

Throughout the month, communities across Alberta are hosting events, workshops, cultural celebrations, and more. These gatherings offer meaningful opportunities to connect, learn, and honour Indigenous voices and traditions.

Can't attend an event? There are many other ways to participate in learning and reflection:
• Read Indigenous-authored books, watch films, or listen to podcasts that share Indigenous perspectives and experiences

The Public Health Division in the Department of Primary and Preventative Health Services has been notified of a person with confirmed measles who has been in a public setting while infectious in Calgary. Individuals who were in the following locations during the specified dates and times may have been exposed to measles.

Q: What is one misconception people have about family medicine?

A: That we're not as skilled as specialists. Reality: family doctors are highly trained and highly knowledgeable in various areas of medicine. We need broad and deep medical knowledge to diagnose and treat the wide range of conditions we see daily. This comprehensive skill set allows us to provide holistic, patient-centred care.

May 4 – 9 marks Safety and Health Week, a time to focus on preventing injury and illness at work, at home, and in our communities.

Simple steps can go a long way in keeping you and those around you safe:
• Keep your spaces clear, well-lit, and free of tripping hazards to help prevent falls
• Practice everyday habits like handwashing and staying home when sick to reduce the spread of illness
• Stay up to date with routine check-ups, screenings, and vaccinations
