Powerful work by the incredibly bold and talented Marie Anny Bertsch - putting a picture to something that can be difficult to explain: the mental load.

Gender equality doesn’t just happen in workplaces, boardrooms or politics. It starts at home.
And the data tells us we still have work to do.

🌎 The World Health Organization reports that women perform an estimated 76% of unpaid care activities globally. (World Health Organization)

🌎 UN Women reports that women spend approximately three times as many hours on unpaid care and domestic work as men globally. (UN Women)

Household equality isn’t only about who washes the dishes. It’s also about who notices the dishes need washing.

- Who remembers the appointment?
- Who notices the groceries are running out?
- Who books the dentist?
- Who organizes childcare?
- Who keeps track of school schedules, birthdays and family commitments?
- Who sees what needs to happen next, without being asked?

That invisible planning, remembering and anticipating is part of the mental load.

So how can partners create more equality at home?

👉 Own responsibilities - don’t just “help.” Take responsibility for noticing, planning and completing them.

👉 Divide the thinking, not just the chores. “Tell me what you need me to do” still leaves one person managing the household.

👉 Have regular conversations about workload. Ask whether the division actually feels equitable - not simply whether both people are doing something.

👉 Take entire areas of responsibility. If you own school lunches, appointments or laundry, own the whole process from noticing - planning - doing.

UN Women specifically identifies sharing care work and redistributing unpaid care and domestic responsibilities as important parts of advancing gender equality. (UN Women Knowledge Hub)

Equality in the household doesn’t necessarily mean everything is divided perfectly 50/50 every day.

It means responsibility shouldn’t automatically have a gender.

Reminder: Have You Booked Your Mammogram?

If you’re 40 or older in Alberta, it’s time for your regular breast cancer screening! I plan close to my birthday every year so I don’t forget 🎂

Screening can detect breast cancer before you notice any symptoms (when treatment is often simpler and more successful)

Personally, because I have dense breast tissue and breast implants, I need an ultrasound as well as a mammogram. When I was 40, the technician educated me on breast health and explained my breast density score. Dense Breasts can be a cancer risk because they make a mammogram harder to read so small cancers could be hidden.

What you should know:

✅ your first mammogram requires a referral from your healthcare provider. After that, you can self-refer for future screening.

✅ During your appointment, two images of each breast are taken. Yes, it’s a little awkward to stand and have your b**b squeezed one at a time by a machine. But it is really quick!

✅ Wear a two-piece outfit to make changing easier.

✅ For dense breast folk like me; we need a referral from our family doctor every year in order to get the ultrasound

Don’t wait until you notice symptoms. Annual screening mammogram is one of the most important things you can do for your health.

💗 Take a few minutes to book your appointment, and share this reminder with someone you love.

“How do I ask my doctor to test my eye for an STI?”

Like this:

“Can my eye be tested too?”

Or:

“I’ve had eye symptoms and I’m wondering if STI testing is appropriate.”

Or simply:

“I’d like STI testing. Are there any other areas that should be tested?”

That’s it!

Your healthcare provider’s job is not to judge your lifestyle. Their job is to help protect your health.

STI testing isn’t always limited to the ge****ls. Depending on symptoms and exposure, testing may include:

✓ Eyes
✓ Throat
✓ Re**um
✓ Ge****ls

The more information you share about your symptoms and exposure, the better your healthcare provider can determine what testing is appropriate.

Let’s normalize these conversations.
No embarrassment.
No shame.
No awkwardness.

Just healthcare.

Have you ever had to ask for STI testing in a way that felt uncomfortable?

What do you wish someone had told you before your first STI test?

👇 Share your experience below. You never know who it might help.

and remember, you can self refer to see our doctors at MAUD 🫶

It’s a right for everyone.❤️
