Barrier-Free Alberta is hosting an important conversation on accessibility in Alberta. This event will educate participants about accessibility, the barriers people continue to face, and the limits of current legal protections in our province. Explore the proposed private member’s bill and what it aims to achieve, while centering lived experiences to highlight the real-world impact of inaction. Bringing together perspectives from government, business, and the non-profit sector, this discussion will move beyond awareness — equipping participants with clear, practical steps to help advance meaningful accessibility legislation in Alberta.
ASL will be provided.

It's World Snow Day! Being so close to the Canadian Rockies, we get a lot of the fluffy, white flakes in our neck of the woods, often well into spring while others are welcoming blossoms on trees (as well as one random time in August).

Our prolonged winter season means accessibility in snowy conditions is top of mind for us for the better part of the year. Here are a few of our top tips for ensuring people with disabilities can safely navigate our communities:

❄️ Keep sidewalks, driveways, pathways and handrails clear of snow and ice. Shovel as soon as possible after a snowfall and use salt or pet-safe ice melt to prevent slippery surfaces.
❄️ Ensure you don't block sidewalk and street corner access with snow piles, as it may force those with mobility devices into the roadway.
❄️ Keep outdoor areas well-lit for visibility of snow and ice.
❄️ If you're responsible for snow removal outside of a business, ensure excess snow isn't piled into accessible parking spaces and doesn't block entry points to the sidewalk.
❄️ Make sure carpets and mats inside of doorways are kept clean and flat so they don't provide a slipping or tripping hazard.
❄️ Write to your local government representative and request proactive snow removal policies for public sideways, street corners and walking paths.

Enjoy the sweater weather and stay warm and safe!

On World Braille Day, we remain committed to inclusive communication for everyone. For those who are blind or have visual disabilities, Braille was an early system for these individuals to stay connected to the world around them long before technology had advanced. Today, we celebrate the tools that empower individuals to participate fully without barriers.

Today we celebrate practicum students whose curiosity, compassion, and hard work strengthen the DI. Across the Free Goods Program, Health, and Housing, they help keep dignity at the centre—listening first, using people-first language, and making our work accessible to everyone.

Student spotlight — Solome Baraki
“I’d volunteered at the DI before, but my Communications practicum deepened everything. I learned to listen first and write with dignity. That experience became a launchpad I’m now a digital marketer and social media manager.”

Did you know that 1 in 10 Canadian children lives with a disability that can make trick-or-treating difficult or even impossible?
Uneven walkways, loud sounds, or bright lights can make trick-or-treating overwhelming for children with mobility or sensory challenges. But a few small steps, like offering treats at the end of your driveway, providing non-food options, or adding gentle lighting can make a huge difference.
This year, join the movement for a more inclusive Halloween.
