We’re featured in The Globe and Mail this weekend!

Thanks to our donors, as of December 2025, more than 8.1 million people now have access to local eye care through 204 community eye health projects, with 2,021 villages declared free from avoidable vision loss.

The feature highlights how we’re strengthening access to eye health through a donor-centred approach, including digital giving options that make it easier for people to support in ways that work best for them.

“Monthly giving provides predictable funding for programs built to last, including community-led eye health systems where local teams and volunteers carry the work forward,” says Amy Dunn Moscoso, Senior Manager, Digital Giving and Communications.

What is a cataract?

A cataract develops when the eye’s natural lens becomes cloudy, making vision increasingly blurred over time.

It is one of the most common causes of vision loss globally, and one of the most treatable. In most cases, sight can be restored through a simple surgical procedure.

However, many people still live with untreated cataracts that affect their ability to work, learn, and live independently.

This is why cataract awareness matters. Not just to understand the condition, but to recognize that vision loss from cataracts is often preventable or reversible.

As a member of the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness, we’re part of a global community working together to strengthen eye health systems and accelerate progress toward eliminating avoidable vision loss.

Events like 2030 In Sight bring this community together, creating space for shared learning, innovation, and collective action across the eye health sector.

When Collins was just two years old, his mother noticed something was wrong with his eyes. She sought help, but the treatment he received at the time did not improve his condition.

Years later, during one of our school eye screening events, Collins was diagnosed with a cataract and advised to undergo surgery, provided free of charge.

With the support of his mother, Collins underwent the procedure.

Today, at 15, he can see much better. His mother describes it simply: she is relieved, and grateful.

Although cataracts are often associated with aging, they can also affect children, shaping how they learn, grow, and experience the world around them.

It’s Cataract Awareness Month; a time to better understand one of the leading causes of vision loss globally, and how sight can often be restored through simple, high-impact surgery.

Mrs. Gerda Armstrong is remembered as someone deeply rooted in care and connection, with many dear friends in her ever-expanding, close-knit community. As a dedicated primary school teacher for decades, she was the ultimate role model for lifelong learning while also touching hundreds of lives in meaningful ways.

But there was something else about Gerda that stood out in a very special way. Giving back was simply part of her life, and it was truly a life well lived. Each spring, she ran a roadside flower stand from her plentiful gardens to raise money for Operation Eyesight 💙 A small, simple act full of generosity and heart.

Over time, that spirit of giving continued in another meaningful way. She also chose to leave a legacy gift. It’s a powerful reminder that generosity can take many forms, from everyday acts of kindness to lasting gifts that continue to change lives long after we’re gone.
