Over the past month, we’ve shared how legacy giving takes many forms.

For some, it’s about family.

For others, it’s about ensuring care continues in communities they may never visit.

Through Operation Eyesight Universal, legacy gifts help restore sight, prevent blindness, and build lasting access to eye care.

If you’ve ever wondered:
– Do I need a large estate to leave a gift?
– Can I still prioritize my family?
– How do I even start?
You’re not alone.

Many people are surprised to learn how flexible and accessible legacy giving can be.

Many legacy donors at Operation Eyesight Universal didn’t start by planning a legacy.

They started by giving.
Year after year.
Until one day, it felt natural to include that same support in their will.

You don’t need a large estate to make a meaningful charitable gift in your will. In fact, most bequests in Canada come from people of average net worth. And every gift, large or small, makes a difference.

To help demystify what legacy giving actually looks like in practice, we recently spoke with Nathalie Farrah from our fundraising team. She answers common questions and shares what many people are surprised to learn when they first explore planned giving. Read the interview: operationeyesight.com/anyone-can-leave-a-legacy

Mrs. Gerda Armstrong is remembered as someone deeply rooted in care and connection, with many dear friends in her ever-expanding, close-knit community. As a dedicated primary school teacher for decades, she was the ultimate role model for lifelong learning while also touching hundreds of lives in meaningful ways.

But there was something else about Gerda that stood out in a very special way. Giving back was simply part of her life, and it was truly a life well lived. Each spring, she ran a roadside flower stand from her plentiful gardens to raise money for Operation Eyesight 💙 A small, simple act full of generosity and heart.

Over time, that spirit of giving continued in another meaningful way. She also chose to leave a legacy gift. It’s a powerful reminder that generosity can take many forms, from everyday acts of kindness to lasting gifts that continue to change lives long after we’re gone.

Leave a gift to Operation Eyesight in your will and join the global movement to change the lives of people affected by avoidable vision loss.

Legacy gifts to Operation Eyesight don’t just support individual treatments.
They help build lasting access to eye care.

That can include:
👁️ establishing vision centres to bring eye care closer to communities
💧 rehabilitating boreholes to support access to clean water
🏥 strengthening healthcare systems to embed eye care into them

In short, legacy gifts help build systems that last, so communities can see, thrive and move forward for generations.

A legacy gift is a way to continue supporting causes you care about after taking care of your loved ones.

Our donors leave us:
– a percentage of their estate
– a fixed amount OR
– the remainder after family is provided for

It is flexible, and it can be updated at any time.

This Mother’s Day, we’re celebrating the quiet ways mothers shape the future 💛

Years ago, Pricila joined our Hospital-Based Community Eye Health Program in India. Witnessing the impact of avoidable vision loss in her community, she encouraged her daughter Jomi to train as a vision technician.

That encouragement became a lifelong purpose.

Today, Jomi helps people access the eye care they need, while Pricila continues serving her community through outreach work.

A mother’s love can inspire confidence, compassion and purpose. Sometimes, it can even help restore sight to thousands of people.

This Mother’s Day, honour someone who helped shape your life by sending an eCard that helps bring sight-saving care to others. Visit operationeyesight.com/ecards

Just days ago, we shared Gwendolen Crowe’s story and how her legacy is helping expand access to eye care in Malawi.

This is what that legacy looks like.

Simeon, a retired teacher from Malawi, lost his sight six years ago. He could no longer read or recognize faces, and daily life became difficult. He relied on his wife just to get around.

At Chitipa District Hospital, where eye health services are now available thanks to Gwendolen’s gift, Simeon was diagnosed with cataracts and received surgery. Today, he can see again.

“I can read my Bible again and connect with others.”

Gwendolen’s compassion didn’t end with her lifetime. It continues through stories like Simeon’s.

Today, Gwendolen’s legacy is part of something tangible.

In Malawi, a new vision centre is helping bring eye care closer to communities that previously had limited access. It means people can be diagnosed and treated earlier and closer to home, instead of having to travel long distances for care.

The centre provides comprehensive eye exams and a range of treatments, including cataract surgery. It also has an optical shop where eyeglasses can be made and dispensed on site.

Gifts like Gwendolen’s help make this kind of long-term, community-based care possible.

It is one way a life of compassion continues, reaching people she may never have met.

Gwendolen Crowe supported Operation Eyesight for decades.

She and her husband John didn’t just give once. They stayed involved over the years through fundraising and planned giving.

As she once said, “Sharing is caring… it’s wonderful to look back on your life and see that you gave back.”

For many people, legacy giving grows naturally from a lifetime of caring.
