Kenya: Bringing Eye Care Closer to Communities 🇰🇪

In Kenya, an estimated 3.9 million people live with vision loss, often caused by cataract, uncorrected refractive error and glaucoma. Through strong partnerships with county health systems and local communities, Operation Eyesight is helping people access quality eye care closer to home.

Because of donor support in 2025:

👁️ 177,185 people were screened for vision loss
🎓 59,474 students received eye screenings through school eye health programs
🏠 577,168 door-to-door screenings helped identify people needing care
🔬 10,953 sight-saving surgeries were performed
👓 13,666 pairs of eyeglasses were dispensed
✅ 104 Avoidable Blindness-Free communities have been declared to date

In Kajiado County, students at Kiserian Primary School received prescription eyeglasses with transition lenses, helping them see clearly in the classroom while protecting their eyes outdoors. Clear vision helps children learn, participate and build confidence for the future.

Lasting change starts with strong local eye health systems.

Rather than providing short-term solutions, we work with local partners to build sustainable eye care services that continue serving communities for years to come. Together, we screen people for vision problems, provide treatment, strengthen local capacity and raise awareness so families can get care sooner.

In 2025 alone, Operation Eyesight and our partners screened more than 1.79 million people and provided treatment to more than 640,000 people.

👁️📋 How do you eliminate avoidable blindness?

You start by understanding who needs help, where gaps exist and why people aren't accessing eye care.

That's why Operation Eyesight has launched the Rapid Assessment of Visual Impairment (RAVI) Study in Pushprajgarh Block, Madhya Pradesh.

Over the next two months, trained teams will conduct eye screenings and surveys with approximately 3,700 to 4,000 adults aged 40 and older across 80 communities. The study will help identify the causes of vision loss, barriers to care and opportunities to improve eye health services.

For the first time, this region will have reliable, scientifically validated eye health data to guide future planning and investment.

🎉 A landmark achievement for eye health in Northeast India: Miao-Khagam Block in Changlang District, Arunachal Pradesh has been officially declared Cataract Blindness Backlog-Free (CBBF), a major public health milestone and the first such achievement in the state.

This means all identified cataract blindness backlog cases in the block have been treated, helping restore sight, dignity, livelihoods and independence while strengthening community eye health systems.

Led by the National Health Mission – Arunachal Pradesh, NPCB&VI – Arunachal Pradesh, the Changlang District Health Society and the District Administration, this achievement reflects the power of government-led action, strong community outreach and committed frontline health workers.

Operation Eyesight was honoured to support this mission through health system strengthening, community mobilization, household-level validation and data verification, capacity building and documentation for the formal CBBF declaration.

Congratulations to Dr. Taba Khanna, State Programme Officer, NPCB&VI – Arunachal Pradesh, and to the medical officers, ophthalmic teams, ASHAs, ASHA facilitators and field staff whose dedication made this possible.

Most importantly, congratulations to the people of Miao-Khagam Block, for whom sight is no longer a barrier. 🌟

When women lead, communities see the difference.

In Kenya, women trained as community health promoters are helping neighbours access life-changing eye care close to home.

One woman, after having her own sight restored through cataract surgery, began helping other women in her village get the treatment they needed. Mothers whose children regained their sight shared gifts of gratitude, trust and hope.

Together with local health systems and community leaders, we're building a future where quality eye care is within reach for everyone.
