This year, Mother’s Day was the hardest day of my life.

I’m writing this while still in transit, coming home from my mother’s funeral.

Her name was Zeenat un Nisa.
She left this world on May 3rd.

Three weeks ago, I flew to Lahore when she was admitted to the ICU. I truly believed she would come home. I thought we had more time.

She was the kind of woman who made every person feel like they were the most important person in her world. And somehow, she did that for everyone. The people who came to say goodbye all said the same thing in different words:
“She loved me like I was everything.”

That was her gift.

She started school at 14, graduated in four years, and became the first woman in her family to attend university. In her 50s, she learned esthetics and became a sought-after bridal makeup artist in Lahore because she never believed it was too late to begin again.

She was married to my father for 53 years and his true companion, in his words. My brother called her his solace.

She was my foundation.
My first teacher.

I was 16, living in Saudi Arabia, going to high school. While other mothers were strict about makeup and dressing up, mine taught me how to apply lipstick properly and how to shape a perfect Cupid’s bow. She bought me my first saree and showed me how to drape it, where every pin should go.

She taught me how to thread brows.
How to pot a plant.
What to mix into the soil.
How to make chicken curry.
How to stay away from gossip.
How to care for people sincerely and without condition.

There is not a single turn in my life where I will not think of her.

She grew gardens with her own hands. She carried herself with quiet elegance. She pushed me hard because she saw what I could become long before I did.

And when life became difficult, and it did, she showed up.
Every single time.

She is a large part of why I do this work.

If you still have your mother, tell her what she means to you. Today. Tomorrow. As often as you can.

Life is short.
