The ones who showed up. 🤍

A birthday is only as good as the room it’s celebrated in. And this room? It was everything.

August 18th at The Wilde on 27 — a patio buyout, a table full of people who chose to be there, and the kind of energy that only happens when love is genuinely in the room.

I have been told that I work a room. That I keep the energy flowing. That hosting looks effortless from the outside. What people don’t always see is that it takes everything you have — and that the only reason it works is because the guests bring just as much as the host does.

Every single person in this photo brought it. 🥂

To the team at The Dorian Hotel and The Wilde on 27 — thank you for holding with such grace and turning it into something none of us will forget.

On the 27th floor of The Dorian Hotel , with the Calgary skyline as witness and The Wilde on 27 setting a table worthy of the moment — we celebrated the most extraordinary person I get to call mine.

Manolo Simon | Etienne | Domingo — you came into this world on August 18, 1986, and every room you have walked into since has been better for it. Your wit. Your depth. Your commitment to beauty in all its forms. The way you see the world and then write it down so the rest of us can finally understand what we were looking at.

Forty looks like this. Beaded. Intentional. Unbothered. Magnificent.

Thank you The Dorian Hotel and The Wilde on 27 for holding this night with such grace. And thank you to everyone who showed up — you know who you are. 🥂

It started with a welcome plate. 🥂

Keira at Worthington PR & Story made an introduction that opened a door I’ve been walking through ever since — an ambassadorship with The Dorian Hotel , Calgary’s first and only lifestyle hotel.

But the truth is, The Dorian and I found each other the moment they opened. I’ve been a patron of this property and a regular at The Wilde long before any formal relationship existed. Some places just claim you.

The Dorian is not a typical hotel. It is an experience built around the spirit of Oscar Wilde — yes, that Oscar Wilde. Sharp wit. Fearless individuality. The belief that to define is to limit. The entire design philosophy — the houndstooth rugs, the brass accents, the wild rose motifs lining every hallway — is an homage to The Picture of Dorian Gray, brought to life by developer and entrepreneur Patricia Phillips after a decade of vision and her own time in London.

137 rooms and suites. European-inspired interiors. The Wilde restaurant on the 27th floor with floor-to-ceiling glass and views that remind you exactly what city you’re in.

And this week? We came back for something extraordinary.

Manolo Simon turned 40. And The Dorian said yes to all of it. 🤍

A Tuesday evening a few weeks ago I sat inside *Midnight Visions — Through the Heart of the Night* and didn’t move for two hours. 🎻

A gift from my friend Caroline — who has deep ties to Calgary’s Dutch community and made sure I was in that room. Some of the best evenings of your life start with someone simply saying “you need to be there.”

Three composers. Three emotional worlds. One evening that reminded me why live performance exists.

Beethoven’s Ghost Trio opened the night — named not by the composer but by listeners who felt something spectral in that second movement. They were right. Then came Schoenberg’s *Verklärte Nacht* — Transfigured Night — originally written for string sextet in 1899, a single continuous tone poem about forgiveness, transformation, and two people walking through a moonlit forest carrying the weight of an impossible truth. Arranged here for piano trio, it felt even more intimate. More exposed. Nowhere to hide.

After intermission, Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 2 in E Minor — written in 1944 during the darkest chapter of WWII, dedicated to his friend who died at the front. The finale is built on Jewish folk melody — a dance of grief so precise it becomes unbearable in the best possible way.

Enzo Kok Charlotte .cello Maxim Heijmerink Three musicians currently in residency at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity — world class artists living and creating right here in our backyard. This is what Calgary quietly holds that the rest of the world doesn’t always know about.

And Enzo plays a violin built by J.B. Vuillaume — on loan from André Rieu. I kept watching his eyes. Watchful. Cueing. Conducting without a baton while playing simultaneously. At one point I found myself imagining him at a piano — because what I was watching wasn’t just a violinist. It was someone who understood the entire piece from the inside out.

This is what visibility through art looks like. 🤍
