Why are governments taxing the necessities of life?
This receipt should stop every Canadian in their tracks.
Food is not a luxury.
Water is not a luxury.
Clothing, heat, electricity, housing, rent, and education are not luxuries.
They are the basic foundations of a safe and dignified life.
I’m proud of my French ancestry, where bread, wine, family, and community have always been part of everyday culture. Beer and wine may be taxed, but they should not be dismissed as symbols of extravagance while governments continue collecting revenue from the essentials families cannot live without.
When people are struggling to buy groceries, heat their homes, pay rent, and educate their children, taxing those necessities is not fairness. It is government profiting from survival.
Tax true luxury and excess if you must.
But stop taxing the basic needs of ordinary people.
Don’t tax survival.
