The goal was always to make sure they could do better than you.

My oldest daughter, who is now 30, is living her best life in China. And now my 14 year old has moved to Tampa to pursue her soccer dreams.

There is something so wholesome about realizing that this was the reason for all of it. The sacrifices, the hard years, the risks, and building businesses when giving up sometimes would have been easier. It was about creating opportunities for them and giving them the chance at a brighter future.

Building my businesses has also given me something I value even more now. The ability to be present. To show up. To watch them grow and actually witness the things they are accomplishing.

So yes, what you are building right now may have a much bigger purpose than you can see today.

We get impatient. We want the success and the satisfaction now. We question ourselves during the slow days and take the no’s personally.

But keep building.

Accept the slow days. Learn from the no’s. Keep going when it feels like nothing is happening.

Because sometimes the reward is not just what the business becomes.

It is the life that business eventually allows you and the people you love to live.

And moments like this make every hard year worth it. 🤍

This is something I have remembered since I got my first cell phone.

Cell phone companies would offer you EVERYTHING to become a customer. Then once you were actually a customer, those offers disappeared.

I remember calling after being with the same company for years and asking if there was anything they could offer me.

“Oh, that’s only for new customers.”

It was always such an ick.

And I never forgot how it made me feel.

When I started my own business, I knew I never wanted our existing clients to feel like we cared more about getting someone new through the door than we cared about the person who had been choosing us for years.

Of course we have offers to introduce new clients to our studio. But the clients who trusted us the first time, rebooked, came back again, referred their friends, left reviews and continued choosing us year after year?

Those are the clients we should be working just as hard to keep.

After 15 years in business, one of the biggest lessons I have learned is that you cannot build a sustainable business if you are constantly chasing new clients while forgetting about the ones you already have.

If your business feels slow, ask yourself this:

Do you actually need more new clients?

Or do you need better systems to keep the clients already walking through your door?

This one! I feel it to my core.

Lash Artisan Studio in the early days was almost like a lash factory. We had 3 receptionists and 15 lash artists. To put that into perspective, we ONLY did lashes. No other services. We were open 7 days a week and fully booked 2 weeks out.

We were basically on autopilot. There were no real systems in place, but we were busy, and being busy made me feel like I had done it. Like I had built a successful business.

Then COVID came and tested me to my core.

We survived those 2 years thinking, “When we return, everything will just go back to normal.”

As we all know, that was not what happened.

Only 3 artists came back. The rest had moved on to other things during those 2 years, and about 40% of our clients never returned.

For a long time, I kept telling myself, “It will come back next year.”

Then the next year came.

And then another.

That feeling of being stuck was truly unbearable. Eventually, I realized I could not keep waiting for the old business to come back. I had to learn how to run the business I had now.

Systems had to be implemented. We needed actual plans. If this doesn’t work, what is the next action? If that doesn’t work, what do we do next?

We were not flying by the seat of our pants anymore.

Now, when things are slow, there is no “I wonder what’s happening?” and far less doubt. We know our numbers. We know our systems. We know what actions to take. And sometimes, it is simply a slower season in the industry.

After 15 years, we are still standing.

We have fewer employees. We are now a team of 6. But the team is stronger, more aligned, and moving toward the same goal.

I used to think growth meant getting bigger.

Now I understand that sometimes the best growth is building a business that becomes better for the person running it.

We spent years thinking growing meant finding more clients.

But if clients are coming in and not rebooking, leaving reviews, referring friends or returning consistently, getting more people through the door does not fix the actual problem.

Look at what happens after they book.

It took me the last 5 years of being so sick of feeling stuck to finally see it. So this one hits deep.

When you start to have the self awareness to recognize where you are stuck and, more importantly, why you are stuck, everything starts to change.

The person who got you to where you are today may not be the same version of you who can take you to the next level. And sometimes, you have to admit that you may not even be the right person to manage every part of the business anymore.
