🧠+💪 Brain + Body: The Art of Dual-Tasking in Parkinson's Rehab

Let’s level up your ParticipACTION minutes this week! For our Parkinson’s clientele, one of the most effective ways to challenge the brain and body simultaneously is through Dual-Task Training.

In daily life, we rarely just walk. We walk while carrying groceries, talking to a friend, or reading a street sign. Because Parkinson's affects automatic movement pathways, doing two things at once can cause a "freezing" gait or balance loss.

In the clinic, we proactively train this! Try adding a cognitive challenge to your movement at home today:
🟢 While marching in place, count backward from 100 by 7s.
🟢 While tossing a soft ball hand-to-hand, name an animal for every letter of the alphabet.
🟢 While out for a supported walk, name every street or local plant you pass out loud.

By combining thinking and moving, you are directly challenging your basal ganglia and building a highly resilient brain. Log those dual-task minutes for Cranbrook today!

❄️ Cool Ways to Move: Navigating MS in the June Warmth ❄️

We want all of our Multiple Sclerosis clientele to participate in the ParticipACTION Community Challenge this month—but we also know that June brings the summer heat! For many living with MS, a tiny rise in core body temperature can cause a temporary flare-up of symptoms like fatigue or blurred vision (known as Uhthoff's phenomenon).

You don't have to sit the challenge out! Here is how to safely rack up your active minutes:
💧 The "Pre-Cool" Strategy:Drink a glass of ice water before you start your exercises to regulate your temperature from the inside out.
⏰ Time it Right: Shift your active minutes to early mornings or late evenings when the Cranbrook/Kimberley air is crisp.
🏡 Indoor Intervals: Break your activity into short, 5-minute blocks inside an air-conditioned room. Four 5-minute bursts across the day equal 20 logged minutes for our community challenge!

Your health and comfort come first. Let’s stay active, stay cool, and move safely!
See you at Idlewild on June 27th at 9am for our NeuroAlign walk!

🧠 June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month! 🧠

Did you know that what is good for your heart is also profoundly good for your brain? According to our friends at the Alzheimer Society of Canada (), staying physically active is one of the top ways to reduce the risk of cognitive decline and support long-term brain health.

When you engage in steady, aerobic physical activity (even at a moderate level!), your brain releases a special protein called BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor). Think of BDNF as a premium fertilizer for your brain cells—it directly supports memory, learning, and neuroplasticity.

For our clients managing cognitive changes or looking to protect their brain health: let’s use the ParticipACTION Community Challenge as our motivation this June. A brisk 20-minute daily walk, a stationary bike session, or a supported water aerobics class does wonders for your cognitive reserves.

Join the NeuroAlign Team on June 27th at 9am at Idlewild Park lower parking lot for a walk around the lake. We'll take some time to teach you some stretches, strengthening and balance exercises, and cognitive challenges that you can add to your walk to maximize your health benefits! RSVP to [email protected] to let us know you are coming!

Protect your mind by moving your body. 💙 Learn more about brain-healthy habits at alzheimer.ca.

🛠 Occupational Therapy & Cognitive Longevity: Making Daily Life Accessible

June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, and we want to shine a light on a vital pillar of our care team: Occupational Therapy (OT). When an individual experiences changes in memory, spatial awareness, or cognitive processing, the daily tasks that once felt automatic can suddenly become overwhelming and exhausting.

That is where an OT shines. Our OT Nathan doesn't just look at a diagnosis—he looks at the entire picture. By analyzing the dynamic relationship between the Person, their Environment, and the Occupation (Task), OTs find creative ways to bridge the gap between ability and independence.

Guided by frameworks from , our OT Nathan partners with clients and families to modify daily routines, reduce cognitive fatigue, and preserve autonomy:

🧩 Task Chaining & Coding: Breaking complex activities (like cooking a favorite meal or dressing) into simplified, step-by-step visual checklists to reduce cognitive load.

🏡 Environmental Adaptation: Reducing visual and physical clutter in the home to minimize confusion, prevent sensory overload, and reduce fall risks.

⏱ Cognitive Energy Conservation: Structuring the daily schedule so high-focus tasks are aligned with peak energy times, preventing burnout and frustration.

Cognitive changes should never mean losing your sense of self. Let our OT Nathan help you adapt your environment so you can keep doing what you love, safely and confidently.

👉 Do you or a loved one need support navigating cognitive changes at home? Reach out today to see how Nathan our OT services can help.

Parkinson's & The Power of "Big" Movement

💥 Parkinson’s Disease & ParticipACTION: Go BIG This June! 💥

Did you know that physical activity is one of the most powerful tools we have to slow the progression of Parkinson’s symptoms? When participating in the ParticipACTION Community Challenge this month, our number one tip for our PD warriors is to focus on amplitude—or "BIG" movements.

Parkinson’s can cause movements to become small, hesitant, and quiet. When you are out for your daily walks, gardening, or doing home exercises this week, try these three simple cues:
1️⃣ Swing those arms: Exaggerate your arm swing as you walk.
2️⃣ Stomp with intention: Lift your knees slightly higher to prevent shuffling.
3️⃣ Open those hands: Spread your fingers wide during upper-body tasks.

Every big step you take helps retrain brain pathways AND logs valuable minutes for our community challenge! Need help designing a safe, high-amplitude exercise program? Our specialized neuro-physios are here for you.

Launching the ParticipACTION Challenge

🇨🇦 Cranbrook & Kimberley, let’s get moving! June 1st marks the official kickoff of the ParticipACTION Community Challenge, and NeuroAlign is all in! This month, communities across Canada are competing for the title of "Canada’s Most Active Community"—and every single minute of movement counts toward our local score.

At NeuroAlign, we know that "being active" looks completely different for everyone. If you are living with a neurological condition like MS, Parkinson's, or recovering from a stroke, your movement matters just as much. Whether it’s a 5-minute seated mobility routine, a supported walk down the hall, or a targeted balance session with your physio, it ALL counts!

Let's show Canada how active the Kootenays can be. Ready to track your minutes? Visit participaction.com to log your movement, or tell us in the comments: How are you moving today? 👇

☀️ Navigating MS in the Summer Heat: Quick Tips for Staying Cool

As the beautiful East Kootenay summer rolls around, the rising temperatures can bring a hidden challenge for those living with Multiple Sclerosis. Many people with MS experience Uhthoff’s phenomenon—a temporary worsening of neurological symptoms (like fatigue, blurred vision, or balance issues) when body temperature rises even by a fraction of a degree.

If the heat hits you hard, you aren't imagining it, and you don't have to stay trapped inside all summer! Here are a few quick tips to help protect your nervous system:

💧 Pre-Cool and Hydrate: Drink ice water before going outside. It helps keep your core internal temperature down proactively.
🧣 Invest in Cooling Gear: Simple tools like wearable neck cooling wraps, ice vests, or even misting fans can make outdoor community events much more manageable.
⏱️ Time Your Outings: Plan your garden walks or errands for early morning or late evening when the sun is less intense.
