Canada’s first-ever ‘National Guidance to Support Youth Substance Use Health in Canadian Pediatric Hospitals’ is now available. The resource provides an evidence-informed framework and practical tools to strengthen and standardize substance use health care for young people across emergency, inpatient and outpatient settings.

Dr. Selene Etches, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at IWK Health Mental Health & Addictions, contributed to the development of the guidance as a member of the Canadian Advisory on Youth Substance Use, working alongside pediatric substance use experts from across Canada. Dr. Etches says, “this project is an important step toward more consistent, equitable, and responsive care for Canadian youth with substance use disorders.”

Doctors Nova Scotia is thrilled to celebrate Abdelrahman Abu Osba, a student in the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University, who has been selected to receive the 2026 Canadian Medical Hall of Fame award.

Mr. Abu Osba founded the Pathway to Medicine, which connects medical students with high school students to promote medicine as a career. As Vice President of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility and Co-Chair of the Student Diversity and Inclusion Committee, he leads curriculum, programs and advocacy fostering inclusion in education.

On the national stage, he co-authored a paper on international human rights violations as a member of the Canadian Federation of Medical Students. He aims to build equitable healthcare systems where every student and patient feels represented and supported.

August is Acadian History Month and Aug. 15 marks National Acadian Day, a time to showcase the rich culture, resilience and history of Acadian people across the Atlantic provinces.

In Nova Scotia, Acadian communities continue to thrive and shape the province’s identity through language, music, culinary traditions and enduring spirit.

From our archives, retired Doctors Nova Scotia staffer Debbie Traer shares her reflections on growing up Acadian in the Cape Breton community of Chéticamp.

“Growing up immersed in Acadian culture among family, friends and all the folks in our hometown meant being surrounded by a strong sense of community. A people of resilience, adaptability and hard-working character, Acadians have held onto these strengths as a way of life through the generations – lessons passed down from our ancestors.”

As Nova Scotia marks Acadian History Month, Acadian communities continue to shape our province’s identity through language, music and culture.

🚨Hey, Nova Scotia physicians: Did you know we have a grant to support internationally trained physicians (ITPs) in their first three years of practice?

Physicians who choose to relocate to Nova Scotia from elsewhere in the world often face significant financial barriers. If you are an internationally trained family physician in your first three years of practice, you may be eligible for the McCarthy/Stewart Grant.

This grant provides $10,000 to 10 ITPs annually who are licensed to practise family medicine in rural communities, and plan to work in Nova Scotia long term.

Note: This grant is intended for physicians working in underserved, rural communities. Applications from Central Zone will not be considered except those from physicians working in rural communities within Central Zone, such as Hants County, Sheet Harbour, Musquodoboit Harbour and Musquodoboit Valley.
