This is Clara. She’s a pre-med student from Humboldt living with Type 1 diabetes. Last month she toured the Shapiro Lab to see the team’s cure-focused research up close, and she also signed this very special poster outside the lab.

She said it best herself: “Hopefully one day this lab won’t be needed anymore.” We’re working on it, Clara! 🔬🧬

Last week we joined the University Hospital Foundation at their annual Alumni Board Dinner. Dr. Shapiro took the stage as the evening’s guest speaker and was proud to share that we’ve entered into a new strategic partnership to raise awareness and funds for the cure-focused diabetes happening right here in Edmonton. We also joined their panel to talk about what this partnership means for the future.

We’re sending a big thank you to the UHF and President & CEO Dr. Jodi Abbott for bringing us together for such a meaningful evening. Together, we are stronger. 🩷

We’re thinking of all the moms and mother figures out there in the diabetes community. The ones who turned a diagnosis into a mission and learned everything there was to know so their child could live fully and fearlessly.

And let’s not forget the moms living with diabetes themselves, who show up every day with incredible bravery and strength.

It’s National Volunteer Week, and we’re recognizing our newest board member, Jesse Meyer.

Jesse’s daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 3. She is now 8, and like so many others, Jesse’s family has learned firsthand what it means to live with this condition every day. That’s why he gives his time to DRIFCan, to help advance research that could change the future for kids like her.

DRIFCan is powered by dedicated volunteers and board members who give their time to help move our mission forward. We’re grateful for Jesse, and for every volunteer who helps bring us closer to a future without Type 1 diabetes. 💙
