August 31 is International Overdose Awareness Day, a time to remember those affected by overdose, reduce stigma and share tools that can help save lives.

At North End Pharmacy, our team partners with Halifax-based organizations to provide naloxone training and help more people feel prepared to respond in an emergency.

Free take-home naloxone kits are available in Nova Scotia. Kits include overdose-prevention education and naloxone training.

Visit us to ask about a free naloxone kit or training opportunities. For more information about Nova Scotia Health's Take Home Naloxone Kit program, visit the link in our bio.

In an emergency, always call 911.

Moving into post-secondary residence for the first time this fall? 📦 Add the Meningococcal B (MenB) vaccine to your move-in checklist.

If you’re 25 or younger and entering a residence or dormitory operated by a post-secondary institution for the first time, you may be eligible for two MenB vaccine doses at no cost in Nova Scotia.

If eligible, your first dose should be received before moving into residence, with your second dose at least four weeks later.

Getting ready for move-in? Call our pharmacy team to ask about eligibility, vaccine availability and booking details.

As Nova Scotians know too well, ticks are found across the entire province, especially during the warmer months. A few simple habits can help reduce your risk of tick-borne illness.

Here are three tick awareness tips from our pharmacy team:

1. Check often 🔎
After spending time outdoors, check yourself, your children and your pets for ticks. Pay extra attention after time in grass, gardens, parks and wooded areas.

2. Remove ticks promptly ❌
If you find an attached tick, remove it as soon as possible using fine-tipped tweezers.

3. Know the signs to watch for 😷
Keep an eye out for symptoms such as a red rash, fever, fatigue or muscle pain in the days and weeks after a tick bite.

If you’ve been bitten by a tick, our pharmacists may be able to help assess whether preventive treatment for tick-borne illness is appropriate and can also assess and treat some cases of early Lyme disease.

Have questions after a tick bite? Stop by North End Pharmacy or give our team a call.

Heat and humidity can affect more than how you feel. They can also affect how some medications work and how they should be stored.

Here are three summer medication safety tips from our pharmacy team:

1. Stay hydrated
Some medications can increase fluid loss or make dehydration more likely. Drink plenty of water and watch for signs such as dizziness, confusion, dry mouth or less frequent urination.

2. Store medications safely
Heat and humidity can affect certain medications. Keep them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, and use an insulated cooler bag when transporting medications that need to stay refrigerated.

3. Practice sun safety
Some medications can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Wear sunscreen and protective clothing, and seek shade during the hottest parts of the day.

Have questions about how summer heat could affect your medications? Stop by North End Pharmacy or give our team a call. We’re happy to help you stay safe and healthy all summer long. ☀️
