At Sunbeam Community & Developmental Services, we proudly celebrate Pride Month as a time to honour the resilience, diversity, and contributions of the LGBTQ+ community. Our organization is committed to fostering inclusive environments where every individual—regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity—feels valued, supported, and empowered to thrive.

Throughout June, we highlight the importance of acceptance, allyship, and equality through educational workshops, community events, and meaningful conversations. We recognize that true community strength comes from embracing all identities and challenging barriers that prevent full participation.

Sunbeam stands with the LGBTQ+ community in promoting mental health resources, developmental support services, and accessible programs designed to uplift every person we serve. Together, we build a brighter, more compassionate future where diversity is celebrated every day—not just in June.

National AccessAbility Week (May 31 - June 6, 2026) is a national celebration in Canada dedicated to promoting accessibility, inclusion, and the valuable contributions of persons with disabilities. Observed annually during the last week of May, this important week raises awareness, reduces barriers, and fosters communities where everyone can fully participate.

At Sunbeam Community & Developmental Services, we are proud to champion accessibility every day. Across the Sunbeam Community, we support individuals with developmental disabilities by providing inclusive living supports, specialized programs for medically complex needs, day programs, respite care, and autism spectrum services. We also host Developmental Services Ontario Central West Region, helping families navigate vital supports.

During National AccessAbility Week 2026, we invite the community to reflect on progress made and commit to breaking down remaining attitudinal and physical barriers. Together, we can build a more equitable future where every person thrives.

Join us in celebrating inclusion—because accessibility benefits us all. For more information on our programs, visit sunbeamcommunity.ca.

KITCHENER, ON | MAY 27, 2026 – Sunbeam Community & Developmental Services officially celebrated the opening of its newest specialized inclusive living home today in Kitchener. Supported through a $1.72 million capital investment from Ontario’s Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services (MCCSS), the new Fairmount Home will provide tailored inclusive living with wrap-around supports for up to five individuals living with developmental disabilities. This increased local capacity will help Sunbeam to continue enabling and supporting the discharge of individuals from extended hospital stays into permanent, supportive, community-based home environments.

Meet Tessa - Tessa is a sweet, caring, and energetic go‑getter who brings passion and heart into everything she does. Tessa and her family connected with Sunbeam through Urgent Response Services (URS) in November 2025, during a time when big emotions were impacting her relationships and daily life.

With timely, comprehensive wraparound support, Tessa began building skills in emotional awareness, self‑regulation, and communication. With consistent strategies and caregiver coaching, her strengths started to shine — and meaningful progress followed. One major milestone was Tessa’s transition into mainstream school for the first time, along with reconnecting with her sisters and building positive relationships.

Tessa loves art, animals (especially horses and bunnies), games, decorating spaces, and math. A fun fact? She rides a horse named Woody and knows lots of fascinating facts — especially about deep‑sea animals!

Tessa’s journey highlights the power of compassionate, coordinated support. At Sunbeam, we’re proud to support people as they grow, build confidence, and feel valued in their communities.

Meet Candace - This year marks 25 years with Sunbeam, and what a journey it’s been! I started my career at Zeller and Breckwood Homes when they first opened, and right away I fell in love with the environment and the people.

A couple of years later, I moved into the day program, where I spent 20 incredible years with an amazing team of staff who became lifelong friends. Together, we created so many memorable themed days and community outings, always focused on helping the people we support have fun and enjoy meaningful experiences. One of my absolute favourite memories was recreating My Big Fat Greek Wedding — complete with costumes, a glamour photo shoot, a mock wedding, speeches, dinner, and dancing. There was no shortage of laughter, and it’s a memory I’ll always cherish.

Today, I’m the Coordinator, Volunteer Services. While I miss working hands-on with the people we support, I love when they stop by to visit — and I truly enjoy connecting wonderful volunteers who help enhance their days. Partnering with local universities, colleges, and high schools for placements and mentorship programs has been especially rewarding. It’s always heartwarming to see so many students return or stay on because they genuinely love the work we do at Sunbeam.

Outside of work, I’m an avid traveler, and in the summer you’ll usually find me soaking up the sun at my cottage, spending time with my two adult sons. I’m also a big sports fan — cheering for the Blue Jays, Maple Leafs, and TFC — but my biggest love is the NFL. Go Bills!

Sunbeam has grown and changed a lot over the years, and being part of that growth has been incredibly rewarding. As a team, we’ve found joy even in the challenges, and I’ve never stopped learning. It’s true what they say — time really does fly when you love what you do.
