In Alberta, much of our healthcare system is publicly funded, which means appointments can sometimes be brief and focused on immediate concerns.

Private nursing creates additional time and space for education, relationship-building, ongoing support, and collaborative care.

At Holm Collective, holistic nursing care is provided through United Community Wellness by Registered Nurse Layna Palechek, with a special focus on women, mothers, babies, and families.

Private nursing is not about replacing your healthcare team.

A healthy garden rarely grows alone. 🌿

Plants share nutrients through underground fungal networks. Trees support one another. Entire ecosystems work together.

Nature understands something we’ve forgotten:
Connection is essential.
Humans are no different.
When we talk about toxic load, we often focus on what enters the body.

But loneliness, isolation, and chronic stress can become burdens too.

The nervous system was never designed to carry life’s challenges alone.
A conversation with a friend.
A neighbour checking in.
A community event.
A shared laugh.
A familiar face who knows your story.

These moments aren’t luxuries.

They’re biology.

Connection helps signal safety to the nervous system, creating space for resilience, recovery, and healing.

One of our favourite things about Holm isn’t what happens in the treatment room.

It’s the community that grows around it.

Plants absorb nutrients.
Roots filter water.
Microorganisms break down waste.
Nature is constantly working to create balance.

The human body is no different. 🌿
Every day your body filters, processes, repairs, adapts, and eliminates. It’s designed to be resilient.

But even the most resilient systems can become overwhelmed when the burden becomes too great.

That’s what we mean by “toxic load.”

It’s not one product. 🌿
One meal.
Or one exposure.

It’s the accumulation of many small things over time. 🌿
The air we breathe.
The products we apply to our skin.
The cleaners we use in our homes.
The stress we carry.
The sleep we’re missing.

What if movement wasn’t about burning calories? What if it was about creating flow?

When we hear the term “toxic load,” we often think about products, chemicals, or environmental exposures.

But our bodies can also experience burden when things become stagnant.

➰ Long days at desks.
➰ Hours in the car.
➰ Stress that gets stored rather than expressed.
➰ Breath that stays shallow.
➰ Muscles that stay tense.

One of the simplest ways to support the body’s natural processes is through movement.

❌ Not punishing movement.
❌ Not “no pain, no gain” movement.
🟢 Just movement.

A walk around the block.
Stretching between meetings.
A few air squats.
Gardening.
Dancing in the kitchen.
A bike ride with a friend.

This is something we discuss a lot in Osteopathy: Flow, movement, mobilize, circulation... Movement helps circulation, supports lymphatic flow, improves mood, and reminds the nervous system that we’re capable, adaptable, and alive.

The goal isn’t perfection.

It’s creating a little more flow in a world that often encourages us to stay still.

Sometimes reducing our toxic load starts with simply getting moving. 🌱

As part of our June focus on reducing toxic load, I’ve been reflecting on the everyday products we use and how small changes can add up over time.

One swap that took me much longer than expected to find was deodorant.

I searched for years for something that was easy to apply, gentle on sensitive skin, non-toxic, and actually worked. While brands like Routine and Soap Co. were good options, I always felt like something was missing. I was tired of applying deodorant with my fingers, feeling like it never quite neutralized odour, and wondering if my skin was one application away from irritation.

Then I discovered Nala.

While attending a course in Vancouver, we stumbled upon a charming little lunch spot that carried their products. The simple packaging caught my eye, but it was their values that really resonated with me: self-awareness, self-care, and self-advocacy. Made in Canada, women-owned, thoughtfully formulated, and available in a variety of scents—including scent-free—I was intrigued.

After trying it, I was sold.

Nala is the first non-toxic deodorant I’ve found that checks all the boxes for me. It glides on easily, is gentle on my skin, and most importantly, it works. Between seeing clients all day and running to various activities and events afterward, I need a deodorant that keeps up with real life—and Nala gives me that confidence.

Reducing toxic load doesn’t have to mean overhauling everything overnight. Sometimes it’s as simple as finding a product you use every day that aligns a little better with your values and supports your body in the process.

But foundations matter too.

🤎 Nourishing food.
🤎 Connection.
🤎 Time outdoors.
🤎 Moments of rest.

These are the things that help the body do what it was designed to do.

🌱 A garden thrives when the soil is rich enough to support growth.

🫂 People thrive when their foundations are strong enough to support resilience.
