We're excited to share our latest issue, exploring Accessibility in Media, and this time, we've made HEARHEAR even bigger for our members and community.

As our team prepares for Hear Quebec's Annual General Meeting this evening, staff will be working remotely on Friday, June 12.

Every social media graphic, educational resource, and accessibility project starts with someone behind the scenes helping bring it to life.

Hear Quebec is currently seeking a Treasurer to join our Board of Directors.

Accessibility starts with communication 💛

During National Accessibility Week, we're reminded that accessibility doesn't only happen through ramps, policies, or infrastructure.

It also happens in the everyday moments were people connect, participate, and communicate.

For many people with hearing loss, communication accessibility can shape whether a conversation feels inclusive or isolating.

It can look like:
-Trying to follow overlapping voice in a group conversation
- Missing important information during a meeting or appointment
- Relying on guesswork to stay included
- Feeling exhausted from constantly truing to keep up.

These barriers are often invisible to others, but they can have a real impact on participation, confidence, and connection.

That's why communication accessibility matters.

Using captions, reducing background noise, facing someone while speaking, or sharing information in accessible ways may seems small, but these changes can make a meaningful difference.

Because accessibility starts with communication, and communication is where inclusion begins.

Most communication challenges don't come from a lack of effort, they come from the environment we're in and the assumptions we make about how understanding should happen.

Think about a restaurant where the background noise slowly starts to take over the conversation. You're still talking, still engaged, but pieces of the discussion begin to slip away. Or a moment where someone didn't catch what was said, and the response is to repeat it exactly the same way, just louder...When what actually helps is different wording, not more volume.

Or even something as simple as watching a video or joining a meeting and realizing halfway through that you're working harder than others just to keep up.

These moments are common, but they're also adjustable.

Accessibility doesn't always require big changes. Sometimes it's small intentional shifts that make communication easier, clearer, and less exhausting for eveyone involved.

Here are 3 simple hearing hacks you can use everyday to help reduce effort and improve understanding in everyday situations.

Because better communication often starts with changing how we approach it, not just how loudly we say it.

We tend to picture hearing loss in a very specific way.

Maybe it's an older adult wearing visible hearing aids. Maybe it's someone who immediately asks for repetition or clearly identifies their hearing loss.

But in reality, hearing loss doesn't always look like what you'd expect.

It can look different across ages, experiences, and communication needs.

It can be managed through hearing aids, cochlear implants, captioning, lip reading, communication startegies, or a combination of these. And sometimes, it's not visible at all.

That means many people are navigating conversations, workplaces, social spaces, and daily life without others realizing they need support or adjustments.

And when we rely on assumptions about what hearing "should look" like, we can unintentionally miss opportunities to communicate more clearly and inclusively.

Accessibility starts with awareness, and awareness starts with letting go of the idea that you can always see it.

Because hearing loss doesn't always look like what you'd expect.

Hearing loss is often talked about in terms of sound.

But for many people, it's also about energy, confidence, connection, and the effort it takes to keep up with everyday conversations.

Sometimes the hardest part isn't hearing, it's constantly trying to fill in the gaps.

It can look like:
-Smiling and nodding when you missed something
-Avoiding noisy enviornments
-Feeling exhausted after social gatherings
-Pretending everything is fine
-Slowly pulling back from conversation that once felt easy

And because hearing loss is often invisible, many people don't realize how much effort is happening behind the scenes.

That's why awareness and accessibility matter.

Small changes; patience, captions, clearer communication, reducing background noise, can make a meaningful difference in helping people feel included and connected.
