Champagne Hill Botanicals

Champagne Hill Botanicals Wildcrafted herbal remedies, botanical body care, herbal teas & edibles & more. Open by appointment

My name is Jain Alcock-White and I am the founder and owner of Champagne Hill Botanicals, my plant passion project. I live on Vancouver Island where I have been fortunate to live and ramble through the forests near my home. Everything I do is instilled with a deep love and respect for nature. I harvest only what is abundant and in season, and I employ ethical harvesting practices. My two children

are an integral part of my practice; we seek to nurture our relationship with nature and to bring that same relationship to you. Here at Champagne Hill Botanicals, I offer nature-based education, herbal remedies and skin care products for optimal health and a grounded spirit. What you might see in the shop depends on the season but the shelves will always be stocked with products directly inspired by and crafted from nature. I offer seasonal foraging and feasting events and workshops; these range from plant walks to foraging and preparation workshops where you can learn how to make your own herbal pestos, herbal oxymels, or wild teas. The list is always changing and the workshop topics are fairly diverse – again, it depends on the season as I craft my offerings around the plants that are growing around me. My background and trainings are as diverse as my offerings; I have considerable education and experience in botany, ecology, holistic nutrition, and herbalism. I have a Diploma in Recreation, Fish and Wildlife Technologies, a Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Management, I am a Certified Holistic Nutrition Practitioner (CHNP), and I am a student of Kami McBride (Handmade Healing Herbal Oils at Living Awareness) and Sajah Popham (Vitalist Herbalism at the School of Evolutionary Herbalism). While my trainings in herbal medicine are on-going, I wish to bring the joy that plants have brought into my life, into yours. I offer 1:1 consultations which you can find on the services tab or go to https://www.champagnehillbotanicals.ca/work-with-me

1:1 clients will work with me over the course of twelve weeks, during which time we will customize a holistic nutrition plan for whole health. Reconnecting with nature is the cornerstone of my practice; you can expect to receive nutritional recommendations with a focus on eating foods that are in season in your bio-region, as well as guidance on how to achieve mental, emotional, and spiritual peace through connecting with nature. You have tried diets and exercise programs as an attempt to achieve "health" but you have either not reached your goals or you have felt unsatisfied at any point along the journey.

- You have come to realize that health is more than just food and you want to learn how to eat in accordance with the seasons, integrating a nature-based flow into your life.

- You are interested in discovering how cultivating a relationship with nature can help you achieve a healthier outlook beyond traditional diets.

- You are interested in attaining a sense of health that is holistic and that brings health to all parts of your self - physical, mental, emotional, spiritual.

- You want to feel healthy, vibrant and grounded.

I went on another amazing trip to the Haihte Range - I’ve been wanting to explore this area for years, and it did not disappoint!

We battled a rough spur road, camped on a decidedly un-flat road, scrambled through forest and scree, crossed the Upper Rugged Glacier, and climbed Rugged Mountain via the Walsh-Facer-Hutchinson route. Amazing scrambling, spectacular views, and a summit mostly free of bugs!

The next day we attempted Merlon, but route-finding, steep icy snow, a moat, and increasingly questionable weather eventually convinced us to turn around. Just as we were retreating, the rain arrived. I also managed to drop my glacier glasses into the moat - but after some rather ridiculous glacioneering, they were successfully retrieved!

Sunday brought a beautiful inversion and a very wet hike through the forest back to the vehicle.

A fantastic few days in a truly magical mountain landscape. Very Lord of the Rings-esque. 🏔️

Oh, and one thing I really love about mountains and climbing, is I spend the whole time with my hands on the rocks, the Earth, the trees, the branches, the heather… Sleeping on the Earth, eating on the Earth, breathing the air, and being in complete connection.

I have really worked hard to spend as much time as possible immersed in nature this summer. It has meant that my yard is in disarray, I have missed harvesting some plants and will probably have less products this winter during the Christmas markets, but so far, it has all been worth it.

These photos capture a three day canoe trip from mid August. There was sun, there was wind and rain and hours of thunder, smoky skies, and beautiful sunsets, and huge western toads hopping through the moss. Oh, and there were mice, so many mice!

I’m randomly inventing one of those silly games we like to play - your super hero name:

☕️

First Name: Last tea you drank

Last Name: Primary energetic quality of that tea (cool, warm, dry, moist...)

Super Power: Any magical properties associated with the plant(s) in the tea.

☕️

I’ll put my answer in the comments!

🫖

Plus, I’ve thrown in some photos of the different tea blends available in the shop.

The thing about mountaineering - traversing the land, sleeping outdoors, carrying your home (your kitchen, safety gear, first aid, everything you need) on your back for days - is that you develop a relationship with the land. A closeness, a kinship, a deep and humbling sense of belonging.

Those who climb (and bushwhack) with you become more than friends. They are your safety, your entertainment, your motivation, your inspiration, and your co-creators.

You don’t simply visit a place - you live within it, however briefly. To love the land is to move through it.

The upper reaches of Noble Creek were expensive stretches of scree and boulder fields and while at first glance, everything seemed gray, there were unmistakable splashes of color across the landscape.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen such huge mounds of Lewis’s monkeyflower or cascade beardtongue. What a fantastic experience to see these plants growing in abundance in such a hard environment.

Plants in order:
1. Lewis’ monkeyflower (Erythranthe lewisii)
2. Erythranthe lewisii And Cascade beardtongue (Penstemon serrulatus)
3. Penstemon serrulatus
4. Scouler’s St. John’s Wort (Hypericum scouleri) and Lewis’ monkeyflower
5. Not the best photo of red columbine (Aquilegia formosa) but the contrast with the backdrop is amazing!
7. Hydaspe fritillary (Argynnis hydaspe) on goatsbeard (Aruncus dioicus)
8. Paintbrush… I’m not sure what species this is. We passed so many in so many different habitats and while I took a lot of photos, I didn’t spend a lot of time looking up close.
9. American alpine speedwell (Veronica wormskjoldii) and Sitka mistmaiden (Romanzoffia sitchensis)
10. Edible thistle (Cirsium edule)

Six days immersed in wild places. Bushwhacking, glaciers, rivers, alpine ridges, and more beauty than words can capture.

It was beautiful, challenging, rewarding, and fun. It’s always hard returning to a world of schedules and obligations when you know places like this still exist.

A Brocken spectre, a glory, and a curious grouse felt like fitting reminders of the magic that’s waiting out there.

I have almost 350 photos!

‘tis the season of everything in bloom. Such an overwhelming array of beautiful flowers, vibrant colours, insect buzzing - life making it all happen.

It is hard to keep up with it all… my dehydrators are humming, I’ve got tinctures to tincture, the farmers market is already in peak summer mode with so much fresh produce, and I am heading off to climb some mountains this weekend & next week, and I am crossing my fingers that my garden can slow down while I am away so that I don’t miss anything!

I hope that you are gazing deep into the flowers that are blooming around you because just look at the secrets they are keeping! So much beauty to be seen that we miss if we don’t take the time to look closely (those fireweed curlicues! 💜)

I’m in the midst of crafting a new batch of Fountain of Youth Face Serum (I think there are 2-4 bottles left until the next batch is ready).

This cooling botanical serum feels like a gentle May rain on the face - refreshing, soothing, and restorative. Created for skin that feels dry, overheated, stressed, or weather-worn, it helps replenish moisture, calm inflammation, and restore softness and luminosity.

Infused with a gathering of flowers and herbs chosen for their nourishing and skin-loving qualities, it offers a unique botanical fragrance all its own - fresh, green, floral, and impossible to replicate - primarily of red elderflower but with layers of aroma.

Brightening, smoothing, and softly plumping, it welcomes back a healthy glow while offering a small moment of refreshment at the beginning and end of each day.

Swipe through to meet the plants behind the formula.

Find it at my Farmers Market booth on June 21st (I’m at the Cedar Farmers Market every other Sunday) or visit my website to learn more.

Spring is really here - and it almost feels like summer. Plants are blooming early, the soil is already drying out, and those bright, lively summer colours are starting to show up everywhere. There’s a real sense of energy and momentum in the landscape right now.

It also feels fitting that today is my birthday - I’m a spring baby, a Ta**us, very much rooted in the spirit of the earth and the unfolding season, with a quiet sensitivity to the subtle, living vibrations of plants, stone, water - earth and sky.

The first Cedar Farmers Market of the season - our Mother’s Day market - is this Sunday, May 10. I’ll have a lovely selection of items on sale to celebrate the season, and it’s always such a welcoming, community-filled way to mark the shift into spring.

I’m also really looking forward to teaching a workshop at the NALT Native Plant Nursery on wild herbal teas, this Saturday - working with fresh, seasonal plants in simple, nourishing ways.

Wishing you all an abundance of plants, inspiration, and a beautiful start to the season.

My birthday is less than a month away.

I’m usually the kind of person who lets it pass quietly - turning a page without much mention. But this year feels different. I keep reflecting on this upcoming date.

I am, realistically, somewhere around halfway through this life.

It may sound a bit morbid, but it’s also true, and it feels worth sitting with.

There’s sadness in that. So many things I wish I had done differently. So many moments I’d go back and reshape if I could. Regret has a way of surfacing when you start to feel time like this.

And yet, alongside that, there is so much gratitude.

I get to be here. On this Earth. In this life that is messy and hard and also breathtakingly beautiful. There is still so much joy, so much to experience, and I feel like I’ve barely even begun.

The wind moving across my skin, stirring the leaves and spring blossoms - such a quiet, simple delight.
The pull of the mountains, asking more of me, pushing my body higher, exhilarating - something I crave.

Being alive isn’t meant to be easy.

And maybe that’s why I keep returning to the land - to the soil, the plants, the water, the sky. The more-than-human world that steadies me, teaches me, calls me deeper.

I wish I could share what it truly feels like -
to hug a tree when you really know it,
to touch a boulder and feel it speak back through your skin,
to keep climbing when your body is tired and fear is present,
to make medicine from plants that feel like family.

There’s a kind of knowing there. A connection that keeps pulling me forward.

It’s a beautiful thing.

And if you’re here, walking your own path through all of this
through the beauty and the ache, the effort and the wonder
I hope you keep going.

There is still so much to feel.
So much to become.

I’m here for it. I hope you are too.
