With personalized modifications, anyone can gain strength without contributing to an existing injury.
Tony's bench press modifications:
🔴 Tight abdominal muscles and feet up on the bench protects my lower back.
🔴 Thumbless grip allows the barbell to sit on the "shelf" of my lower palm keeping the weight directly over my radius/ulnar and lets my shoulders slightly externally rotate.
🔴 Safety bars on either side in case the barbell drops.
Pad behind head to manage my cervical degenerative disc disease. (Without the pad, my head is too low and a nerve is pinched that weakens my left tricep.)
🔴 Pads on my chest to ensure the bar goes low enough, yet not too low. If the bar goes too low, my unstable acromioclavicular joint will shift and weaken my shoulder structure.
🔴 My competition days are long gone and this is not a competition-technical bench press. However, I get to keep my strength for everyday living.
