It’s amazing to watch the garden grow from wee little seeds, to full thriving and healthy plants. I am once again thankful to be part of another season with TCM Herb Learning Garden and although life took me away from much of the work this year, I know it was a temporary blip. Highlights for me were welcoming members of the TCM professional community (ATCMA of BC) for a workshop today led by Angela and Chris about how to start a TCM garden. We have learned so much in these few short years, and for me, integrating TCM thought and theory with horticultural “know how” (thanks Chris and Joseph) has truly deepened my connection to the medicine. Having opportunity to share this with TCM colleagues today was a real pleasure. I hope everyone had a good time, and learned something new. Herb nerds unite! 🌿🪴

Trees have long been a source of inspiration in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Just as a tree needs strong roots, balanced nourishment, and room to grow, our health depends on a solid foundation and the smooth flow of energy throughout the body.

In TCM, the Wood element is associated with growth, resilience, flexibility, and renewal. Like a healthy tree bending with the wind rather than breaking, we thrive when we adapt to life’s changes while staying deeply rooted in our well-being.

Take a moment today to connect with nature. Stand beneath a tree, notice its strength and patience, and remember that healing is often a gradual process of steady growth—one season at a time. Movéo Sport North Van

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), scent is considered medicinal because aromatic substances are believed to carry a highly active form of Qi—vital energy—that can move swiftly through the body’s channels, influence the circulation of energy, and affect the internal organ systems.
While many Western approaches frame aromatherapy mainly as a tool for emotional relaxation, TCM treats aromatics (Fang Xiang) as a distinct category of therapeutic substances. Their effects are understood to act not only through various organ systems, but also through immediate contact with the senses.
·      Moving Qi and Breaking Stagnation: According to TCM theory, pain, emotional tension, and illness often arise when Qi becomes blocked or stagnant. Aromatic substances are valued for their ability to disperse stagnation, encourage movement, and restore a smoother flow of energy.
·      Reviving the Spleen and Transforming Dampness: The Spleen and Stomach are responsible for digestion, nourishment, and fluid metabolism. When these systems are weakened by poor diet, chronic stress, or overwork, “Internal Dampness” may develop, often described as heaviness, fatigue, brain fog, sluggish digestion, or a feeling of being weighed down.
·      Opening the Orifices and Calming the Shen: The “orifices” refer to the sensory openings of the body, especially those of the head: the eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. These are closely connected to consciousness, perception, mental clarity, and the Shen, often translated as the Spirit or Mind. Aromatic substances are traditionally used to help clear the senses, sharpen awareness, and support emotional steadiness.

Xīn Nián Kuài Lè-Happy New Year 新年快樂 ! Today on February 4 at 04:02 (UTC+8) in the Northern Hemisphere is the Solar start date–the actual astrological + seasonal start date of the year of the Bǐng Wǔ 丙午 Fire Horse 🌞🏇! Life+new growth begins in Spring, hence the Solar node of the beginning of Spring, Lì Chūn-Stand (up) Spring 立春, marks the official astrological start date of the Bǐng Wǔ 丙午 Fire Horse year. This looks to be a year of explosive creativity, movement, inspiration, transformational change and breakthroughs! There are few, if any, Kè 克 cycles happening within the pillars of the year. There is no looking back. The world as you know it is changing, and a new world order is launching. Are you ready to ride this journey?!
Yang Fire – Bǐng 丙 – is the call from the Heavenly Stem this year. Bǐng is Sun.🌞It is the Empress/Emperor above, shining bright, warming our spirits, and being a guiding leadership light. Bǐng 丙 the Sun can flicker here and there, challenging its focus. But Bǐng 丙 also likes routine, rising and setting at roughly the same time every day, thus etiquette, rituals and manners are important to them and respectful connectivity. Bǐng 丙 Yang Fire core constitutional selves, or Rì Yuán-Daymaster 日元, tend to be bright spirits, full of fun, joy and desire to share and connect with others. When in balance, they are our light in the darkness, see the positives, and our guiding light. When inspired, Fire in general moves at a rapid pace, faster than even a Wood sign, as its lightning-fast conductivity surges past all other energetics.
This year, Heaven’s descent of Yang Fire – Bǐng 丙 is with the Earthly Branch of Wǔ 午, the Horse, which contains the dominant Xíng 行 Earthly Branch energy of Dīng 丁 – Yin Fire, e.g. man-made fire, with a minor dash of Jǐ 己 – Yin Earth, e.g. the soil or ground we walk on. The Earthly Branch affects and influences the Heavenly Stem, so in this case, since we are adding more Fire to the Sun’s warmth, we are adding extra illumination, warmth and brightness – and extra charges of Fire’s expansiveness, movement and change, burning through and surging forward at a rapid pace. Many countries during this Bǐng Wǔ 丙午 Fire Horse time, have gone through major and rapid transformative changes, both positive and negative. Horse has a minor influence of the Jǐ 己 – Yin Earth as part of its constitution. This is groundedness, tolerance and patience. Find what keeps your footing as you navigate these global changes!
Globally speaking, we will likely see a lot of technological advances as a whole for the globe! Adapt to survive and thrive!
