Today we'd like to recognize International Overdose Awareness Day by sharing a special What Now? podcast episode.

When we asked the hosts which episode they'd like to revisit, without hesitation, David said episode 15 from this past season - Accidental Drug Overdose: Reflections from a Father. In this episode, the hosts speak with Bob, whose beloved daughter, Kathleen, died as a result of drug poisoning.

As David said: "I just felt such a privilege in participating in Bob’s storytelling. After it aired, I received so many comments and affirmations from people who were going through similar experiences and appreciated his words so much.”

Please give this episode a listen and join us today in acknowledging International Overdose Awareness Day to help reduce the stigma associated with substance use and remember those who have died as a result of drug poisoning.

Hi everyone! We are posting this again with a revised location for the community event on August 31st. Please read carefully!

August 31, 2026, is International Overdose Awareness Day. πŸ’Ÿ

Grief after someone has died due to substance use can be very complex and can be experienced as a traumatic loss. It is often an isolating kind of grief because others might not recognize the loss, or those grieving the loss may feel reluctant to share because of the perceived and real judgement from others.

In Peterborough/Nogojiwanong, the drug poisoning crisis has significantly impacted our whole community. At Hospice Peterborough, we provide grief programming to support those affected by drug poisoning.

International Overdose Awareness Day: a Community Event
