The Ontario Public Health Standards are published by the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care under the authority of section 7 of the Health Protection and Promotion Act, R.S.O. 1990, c. The Ontario Public Health Standards (OPHS) and Protocols establish the minimum requirements for fundamental public health programs and services, which include:

assessment and surveillance
health promotion and policy development
disease and injury prevention

LPH searching for dog following bite in Sarnia. Lambton Public Health is seeking information about the location of a dog and its owner following a dog bite incident that occurred around 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, on Devine Street across from Food Basics.

The dog is described as a medium-to-large sized dog resembling a Cane Corso breed, brown in colour with black markings, and was being walked by a male owner with brown hair and baseball cap who appeared to be in his 20s or 30s.

Lambton Public Health’s surveillance program has confirmed mosquitoes collected on Wednesday, Aug. 12, from a trap located in Petrolia, have tested positive for West Nile virus. This is the first instance of mosquitoes testing positive for West Nile virus in Lambton County this year.

To reduce your risk of being bitten by mosquitoes:

• Avoid areas with high mosquito populations.
• Take extra precautions from dusk to dawn when mosquito activity is high.
• Wear protective, light-coloured clothing.
• Use repellants containing DEET or Icaridin. Follow label instructions carefully.
