FACT: If you regularly find yourself asking people to repeat themselves, turning up the TV, or struggling to follow conversations in noisy places, it may not be everyone else’s mumbling. It could be a sign that your hearing has changed.

Hearing loss can happen gradually, making it easy to adjust to the changes without realizing how much you’re missing.

The good news? A hearing assessment is a simple way to find out where your hearing stands.

Think everyone around you has suddenly started mumbling? It might be time to have your hearing checked.

Better Hearing. Stronger Connections. 📢

The moments that matter most are often built around sound—a loved one’s story, laughter around the dinner table, or a quick conversation with a friend. When hearing becomes less clear, staying involved in these moments can take more effort.

Hearing changes are often gradual. You may begin missing parts of conversations, asking people to repeat themselves, or finding it difficult to follow along when several people are speaking. Over time, social gatherings may feel tiring or frustrating, and it can become tempting to participate less.

🦻 Hearing Helps Us Stay Connected

Healthy hearing supports our ability to communicate, respond, and feel included. When conversations are easier to follow, it may be more comfortable to take part in family gatherings, community activities, and everyday interactions.

Canadian research has linked hearing difficulties with social isolation and participation restrictions. Statistics Canada also notes that hearing loss is frequently unrecognized—many people with measurable hearing loss may not realize how much they are missing. Statistics Canada

Recognizing a change in your hearing is not something to feel embarrassed about. It is a common health concern, particularly as we age, and support is available.

🚦Signs Your Hearing May Need Attention

Consider having your hearing checked if you regularly:
✅️ Ask others to repeat themselves
✅️ Turn up the television or radio
✅️ Find conversations difficult in restaurants or group settings
✅️ Feel that people are mumbling
✅️ Struggle to hear on the phone
✅️ Feel tired after listening for extended periods
✅️ Avoid gatherings because following conversations feels difficult

Even small changes can affect how confidently you participate in daily life.

⚠️ Why Regular Hearing Checks Matter
A hearing assessment provides a clearer understanding of your current hearing health. It can identify changes you may not have noticed and help determine whether additional support would be beneficial.

Health Canada explains that age-related hearing loss usually develops slowly and may not be detected until later in life. The Government of Canada’s guidance for seniors also recommends speaking with a family doctor about regular hearing testing and consulting a qualified hearing health professional when needed. Health Canada Public Health Agency of Canada

A hearing check does not automatically mean you need hearing aids. It simply gives you useful information and an opportunity to discuss the options that fit your hearing needs, lifestyle, and preferences.

The table is full, everyone is talking, and the room is alive with conversation.

You’re there—but following along takes work.

One person begins a story while another adds a comment from across the table. Someone laughs, chairs move, dishes clink, and suddenly the words start blending into the background.

You lean in a little closer.

You watch faces carefully, trying to match expressions with the pieces you can hear. When you miss something, you wait for a clue in the next sentence rather than interrupting to ask again.

By the time you’ve pieced it together, the conversation has already moved on.

So you smile when everyone else does. You nod when it feels appropriate. You stay present, even while feeling one step behind.

This is what struggling to keep up can look like.

It isn’t always obvious, and it isn’t simply about volume. It’s the effort of sorting through competing sounds, filling in missing words, and trying to stay connected without drawing attention to what you didn’t hear.

Over time, that effort can turn conversations into something tiring instead of enjoyable. Some people begin speaking less, sitting back, or avoiding busy gatherings altogether.

But conversations should feel like moments to share—not puzzles to solve.

If keeping up has started to feel harder than it used to, a hearing test can help you better understand why.

Hearing aids don’t necessarily need to stop working before it’s time to consider an upgrade.

You may benefit from newer technology if:

• Conversations are becoming harder to follow, especially in noisy places
• You frequently adjust the volume but still struggle with clarity
• Your devices require more repairs or no longer hold their charge well
• Your hearing needs or lifestyle have changed
• You want access to newer features, improved connectivity or better noise management

A hearing care professional can assess your current devices, review your hearing and help you understand whether an adjustment, repair or upgrade is the right next step.

“How do I know if I really need hearing aids?”

It’s one of the most common questions Registered Hearing Instrument Practitioners hear—and the answer isn’t based on age alone.

If you’re frequently asking people to repeat themselves, turning up the television or struggling to follow conversations in noisy places, a hearing assessment can help determine what’s happening.

A Registered Hearing Instrument Practitioner can explain your results, answer your questions and recommend the right next step—whether that means monitoring your hearing, exploring communication strategies or considering hearing aids.

Did you know? More than half of Canadians aged 40–79 have measurable hearing loss — and many don’t know it.

According to Statistics Canada, 54% of Canadians aged 40–79 had measurable high-frequency hearing loss. Even more surprising? 77% of those individuals didn’t perceive that they had a hearing loss.

Hearing loss can happen gradually, making it easy to adapt to changes without realizing you’re missing certain sounds or conversations.
That’s why a hearing assessment can be so valuable — even if you think your hearing is fine.

Could you be missing more than you realize? Book a hearing assessment at beltone.ca.
