Today we celebrate all who mother, nurture, guide, love, and care for others in ways both seen and unseen. 💛

Mother’s Day can hold so many emotions—joy, gratitude, longing, tenderness, grief, hope, exhaustion, and deep love. Sometimes all at once. Wherever this day finds you, we’re holding space for you.

To the mothers, parents, birth givers, caregivers, grandparents, chosen family, those trying to conceive, those navigating loss, and those supporting others through it all: you matter deeply.

It is such a privilege to walk alongside families through these sacred seasons of life.

With love,
Terra Nova Midwifery

Today, we stand in solidarity with Missing, Murdered, and Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit people.

They are the heart of their communities, serving as mothers, life givers, matriarchs, elders and guardians of cultural wisdom.

The ongoing genocide threatens not only their lives but the very fabric of Indigenous culture and heritage.

Their stories and lives matter. We honor them by demanding justice, awareness, and change. Together, we strive for a future where their voices are heard, their lives are valued, and their legacies are never forgotten.

We had such a wonderful day celebrating our dear midwife Jessi before she welcomes her baby!

Nothing like getting a group of midwives and doulas together to fluff the nest, fill the freezer & install a car seat.

Congratulations, Jessi—we’re so excited for you!

Midwife Hania knitting at a recent home birth. This photo means so much to us and is symbolic to how we choose to provide care and practice at TNM.

There’s a long and tender history of knitting at births. For generations, midwives kept their hands busy while they kept watch. The rhythm of click and pull that mirrored the rhythm of a birth unfolding. Knitting was never distraction; it was presence. A way to stay grounded, attentive, and calm. The steady movement signalled patience. Trust. Time.

At the roots of midwifery, the sentiment of a midwife knowing when to sit on their hands, or if a midwife was knitting in the corner, was a great sign that the birth was going well.

In homes across centuries, midwives stitched booties, blankets, and small garments while waiting for new life to arrive reflective of birth unfolding in its own careful pattern.

Over the years, and with the medicalization of birth, a lot of traditional ways and practices like knitting at births have been criticized or lost, considered professional or unnecessary.

We also have loads of charting, home visits, and other competing tasks to triage while being on-call.

Today, Hania carries this quiet tradition forward. Calm hands, soft focus and trust in the process and story being woven. We are so proud to be carrying these ways forward when time and space allow. 🧶✨
