September is Pain Awareness Month.

Pain is not always visible, but its impact is real. For children and youth living with chronic pain, being believed, understood and supported can make an enormous difference.

This month, we recognize their experiences, celebrate their resilience and continue working toward care that sees the whole person, not only their pain.

Pain may be invisible. Support shouldn’t be.

We’re growing our team at NICHE Pain Care! We are currently recruiting for two positions to join our interdisciplinary team in Thunder Bay:

Registered Nurse – Community Pain Clinic: Full-time, permanent. This role will support clinical care, patient and family education, care coordination, and research activities for people living with chronic pain, with a particular focus on children, youth, and other underserviced populations.

Nurse Practitioner – Pelvic Pain Stream / Pediatric Chronic Pain Program: Full-time, permanent. This role will provide comprehensive, trauma-informed care for children, youth, and adults living with chronic pelvic pain while also supporting our Pediatric Chronic Pain Program and working collaboratively across our interdisciplinary team.

At NICHE, we’re building community-based pain care that improves access, reduces barriers, and helps fill important gaps in care across Northwestern Ontario. We’re looking for people who value collaboration, compassionate care, and doing things a little differently when the existing system isn’t meeting people’s needs.

May 5 is the National Day of Awareness and Remembrance for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ people (Red Dress Day).

Red dresses hung in our communities represent Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit people who are missing and murdered. This is not just history. It is an ongoing crisis rooted in colonization, systemic racism, and violence.

In Canada, 63% of Indigenous women have experienced physical or sexual assault. This violence is rooted in the same systemic inequities that continue to shape access to and experiences within healthcare.

Indigenous patients continue to face bias, dismissal, and inequitable access to care, including in how pain is understood, believed, and treated. In chronic pain care, where trust and validation matter, this has real consequences.

Wearing red matters. But it’s not enough.

This day calls for more than awareness. It calls for accountability, for listening to Indigenous voices, and for meaningful action that addresses the systems allowing this to continue.

We remember. We acknowledge. And we commit to doing better.
