🧑🏻‍⚕️ A skin finding I noticed during morning care that turned out to be something more serious…

While I was doing morning care for my patient, I noticed unusual spots on both of her lower legs. At first, I thought it could be a common rash, but something about the appearance made me take a closer look.

She wasn’t complaining of pain when I assessed the area. She was also afebrile and her vital signs were stable.

She was taking a blood thinner, so bruising was one of the things I initially considered. However, I didn’t want to assume the cause based on appearance alone.

I communicated my findings to the physician, and the patient was ultimately diagnosed with hydralazine-induced vasculitis.

She had been taking hydralazine, a medication used to treat high blood pressure, for quite some time. The medication was discontinued and an alternative blood pressure medication was prescribed.

*new or unusual skin findings can sometimes be a clue to an underlying medication reaction or medical condition.
