All eyes were on UTMB last weekend…My eyes were watching from a nutritionist point of view and it was fascinating!

I wrote a blog on my thoughts and how we can apply the same strategies to support our performance nutrition.

August….slipped away like a moment in time!
Filled with so many hugs with friends old and new. Don’t know how my heart can take some many good-byes (or see ya laters) in one month, but I cherished every second! Of course I got to spend a wee second in the mountains too!

What I eat a nutritionist when Im on the road and running big mountain races!

I try to follow a few principles:
🍚 carb focused
🍟 low fat (some fat not nothing deep fried)
😐 simple and plain
🫛 nutrient dense
🌾 lower fiber
🍹 stay well hydrated

It may not be look that pretty and in small towns you have to be flexible and find options. But I’ve worked very hard over the years to heal my gut so that I can adapt to what’s available.

That wasn’t always the case.

Unfortunately, through that healing I’ve also discovered a gluten intolerance in my upper GI tract, so I try to avoid it. Being GlutenFree can also be challenging in different locations, so I do try to plan ahead as best as I can.
If all else fails, there is always a grocery store with minute rice around! Right?🤷‍♀️

What do struggle with when travelling for races?

One minute you’re young and carefree…the next you find yourself harvesting garlic in your backyard! Wouldn’t have it any other way!!

FUN FACTS ABOUT GARLIC:
🧄 Garlic has been part of the human diet for more than 9,000 years. Archaeological evidence shows its use in sites dating back to at least 7,000 BCE.

🧄The culinary garlic we eat today originated in Central Asia.

🧄Ancient Egyptians included garlic in the diet of their pyramid-building laborers as a boost to strength and endurance.

🧄If vampires, werewolves and other demons are a concern, reach for the garlic. To protect yourself against them, hang garlic cloves or braids at doors and windows, or wear a garlic necklace.

🧄Garlic’s antibiotic properties are touted in herbal medicine around the world.

🧄Garlic cloves are rich in amino acids, potassium, iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese, zinc, selenium, beta-carotene, zeaxanthin, and Vitamin C.

🧄Herbal medicine practitioners use garlic to ward off heart disease, cancer, colds and flu.

🧄Garlic has been shown to lower blood cholesterol levels and reduce the buildup of plaque in the arteries.

🧄In your garden, garlic is an effective remedy for aphid infestation. Simply crush garlic into water and spray the mixture on plants and flowers.

Garlic is the best!

I’m all about continuous improvement and reaching big, scary goals, but all of this talk about “optimizing” and “maxing” is exhausting!

When we’re all out here trying to do our best, what happened to being gentle and kind to ourselves?

That’s a reminder to myself as well. It’s not necessary to be in forward motion all the time.

Who’s with me to spend the next few weeks intentionally “un-maxing” and just relaxing?

Nothing like getting through 52km of ski hills and summits fueled with 60-80g of carbs in the form of XACT NUTRITION, tailwind, freezies, and nerds gummy clusters!

Broken Goat 50km (plus a couple) race recap 🐐
It was beautiful, until it wasn’t!

This race is tough!! I lost count of the climbs and summits but always stopped to appreciate the views because I miss the mountains so much. They were made especially rich when accompanied by candy and freezies!

The PACE Trail Running team and all the volunteers put on an incredible race, filled with good vibes and encouragement! So cool to exchange cheers with all the other racers as we passed each other on the couple of out and backs.

I had to dig very deep for this one. I knew I just had to make it one aid station at a time. I managed to sneak in under 10 hours, at least and hour longer than I was hoping for but I’m grateful my body and spirit held up.

I was uncertain if I would even finish given the year of challenges that came with rehabbing a broken ankle. I only slowly started running again at the start of the year but these fitness, strength and mobility take time and maybe I didn’t give it enough. I’ve had issues on and off with my ankle and back forcing me to rest because I could do nothing else but walk without pain and the last 2 months saw little running, even though I still managed a few fun mountain adventures.

Extra special thank you to my cheerleader, chauffeur, photographer, snack finder extraordinaire Greg Jonsen ! I love you! 😘

Perhaps I’ll be back for that trifecta one day, but right now, it’s feet up and a lot of TLC on a lake to recover!

Up next is Broken Goat 50km
This training season has been less than great, so While I’m just hoping to finish, I still have to plan for a long day out in the mountains!

I usually pack more savoury items (salted potatoes, rice balls, sandwich) but I’m travelling in the day before and I think we will get in too late to really prep too much in advance, so sugary carbs it will have to be! I definitely plan to eat whatever salty and GF options the aid stations have but I can’t rely solely on them.

With 4 days out, I’m trying to be more mindful about increasing my carbs and staying well hydrated as the temperature rises.

Looking forward to more time in the mountains and to soak in those views!!

Wish me luck!
