June is National Indigenous History Month, and June 21 recognizes National Indigenous Peoples Day. This month is an opportunity to learn about and celebrate the distinct cultures, histories, traditions, and unique experiences of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.

It is also a time to reflect on the ongoing impacts of colonization and consider how we can all contribute to reconciliation.

The Can-SOLVE CKD Network acknowledges our office is located on the traditional, unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples—home of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.

We remain committed to working alongside Indigenous patient partners, Knowledge Keepers, communities, researchers, and health care leaders to improve kidney health and ensure Indigenous knowledge and perspectives are reflected throughout our research, governance, and network activities.

This month—and every month—we challenge ourselves to unlearn and learn with humility, listen to Indigenous voices, and continue the journey toward meaningful reconciliation.

What happens when patients help shape research from the very beginning?

At Can-SOLVE CKD’s 2026 Annual Meeting, patients, researchers, clinicians, and partners came together to reflect on 10 years of collaboration and the impact patient partnership has had on kidney research across Canada.

Throughout the meeting, research project teams shared examples of how patient partners have helped improve communication, support informed decision-making, and ensure research addresses the issues that matter most to people living with kidney disease and their families.

From community-led kidney screening programs to tools that help patients make informed choices about their care, one message stood out: research is stronger when patients help lead it.

Earlier this month, members of the Can-SOLVE CKD team joined patients and healthcare partners at the Alberta SPOR SUPPORT Unit’s 2026 Northwest SPOR Collaborative Forum in Edmonton.

As part of the forum theme, “People and Partnerships: Powering the Future of Health Research,” Selina Allu and patient partner Manuel Escoto co-presented:

“10 Years of Can-SOLVE CKD: Reflecting on Kidney Innovations and Impact.”

Their session reflected on a decade of patient-oriented kidney research and highlighted how collaboration, patient partnership, knowledge mobilization, and implementation support help translate research into real-world kidney care across Canada.

Selina also shared a poster presentation on reimagining the Canadian CKD Clinic Network through collaborative World Café discussions.
