My husband went camping with his friends for the night. I stayed home, as I had a workshop to run the next morning.
Normally, this would have sent me into a full spiral. My mind would convince me he’s cheating. Finding someone better. Deciding to end things.
And normally, I’d text him and start a fight over something small. All fuelled by my insecurity. It wasn’t healthy and I knew that even while doing it.
But that night was different. I made a pact with myself before he even left that I wasn’t going to lean into the old pattern. I was going to sit with the discomfort instead of acting on it.
So I put on Love Island, ate popcorn and choccy, and held steady through it, even when the discomfort felt almost unbearable. So many times I wanted to grab my phone and text him something sharp. I didn’t 🎉
The steadiness felt like weights in my feet. Something keeping me grounded so I didn’t get swept up.
When he came home, I felt SO proud of myself. I hugged him, and after asking is his night was…I shared how mine went. All the deets. I shared with so much clarity about the fear of abandonment, the insecurity, all of it, but from a grounded place.
It was a beautiful convo, because he didn’t feel attacked and I felt seen. He was shocked this was even happening for me, and so empathetic. We built a plan together for how I could share these feelings going forward, right when they happen, so I feel understood and he doesn’t feel blindsided.
I felt really empowered being honest and grounded with him about what was going on in my head.
Here’s the piece that made the difference. I didn’t share it mid-spiral. I shared it AFTER I’d moved through the emotional experience on my own first.
That’s the practice. Feel it fully, on your own terms, before you bring it to your partner. So what you bring them is the grounded truth, not the reactive one.
Inside UNSHAKABLE, a two part masterclass starting Sept 27th, I am teaching you how to hold steady through really difficult emotions, so you’re not spiraling and all consumed by it. AND I will be guiding you in how to communicate with your partner, when life gets hard. Comment “unshakable” for
