Look, I'm a native plant person. That's my ideology. Others have an ideology of tons of wood mulch and some barberry, some with planting whatever as long as it's thick and lush, some with a lush carpet of decapitated lawn.

I believe our reach should exceed our grasp, and when you aim small you miss small. The more regional native plants one uses, adapted to the specific site conditions, it's a win.

Yes, we're causing a crap ton of climate disruption with 3 degrees celsius warming by 2050. Yes, most species won't be able to adapt fast enough. But my crystal ball or magic 8-ball is not better or worse than yours; I believe native plants can do a better job of helping some species adapt because of co-evolution.

Also, I'm into reconciliation ecology and decolonization (where the conversation gets stickier). That means using plants endemic to place because the wildlife that need those plants are still here -- even in novel ecosystems that are highly altered like urban areas and corn fields. We have a lot of privilege and supremacy to unwind.

You don't have to agree with all of this, or any of it. We're all on a sliding scale at different points on a line. Whatever. Plant something.

But I bet we all want to see more bees and birds. And I bet we like pretty flowers. And I sure as heck bet we despise the waste of lawnscapes.

I know that my thoughts about landscape practices can feel confrontational, because such passionate ideas always will feel that way -- especially when they confront assumptions and beliefs. But not much changes with lollipops; we have to do a lot of hard work individually and culturally if we're going to turn this ship around. It's going to be uncomfortable, and the longer we put off the deep thinking and hard work, the more uncomfortable and painful it will be. We have ALL the solutions we need right now -- and sexy, sexy plants can solves a lot of issues. And gardens can make us vulnerable in some pretty sweet ways, like love.

So we will keep doing the prairie up thing here and in the newsletter and in webinars and books. Because the alternative is boring and depressing.

And now that the native thistles are blooming at HQ -- Cirsium altissimum, which are bright silver on the underleaf which gives them away as native and not invasive -- we're going to see TONS of insects and bugs and spiders. Like:
