Let’s take a look at ingredient lists and how to interpret them so you can make the best nutritional choices for you and your family.

The ingredient list tells you what is actually in the food product.

Did you know you can usually learn the most from the first three ingredients listed.

Ingredients are listed by weight from most to least. So, if sugar is near the top, there is a lot of it! Shorter, simpler lists usually mean there are less additives and less high processing.

TIP: Look for ingredients that have whole grains like “whole wheat”, “brown rice”, or “whole grain cornmeal” instead of “white flour”, enriched flour” or “white rice”. These are less refined, higher fibre foods!

Understanding Best Before & Expiry Dates on Packages.

A “best before” date does not always mean a food is unsafe to eat. In many cases, it’s about quality, not safety. Understanding food labels can help reduce unnecessary food waste and save money.

According to Health Canada:

Best Before Date
This tells you when an unopened product is expected to maintain its best freshness, taste, texture, and nutritional quality when stored properly.

Foods may still be safe to eat after the best before date if:
• the package is unopened
• it has been stored correctly
• there are no signs of spoilage

“Expiry dates” are different and are required on certain products such as meal replacements, infant formula, and nutritional supplements. These should not be consumed after the expiry date.

Simple ways to reduce food waste:
▪︎ Freeze foods before the date if you won’t use them in time
▪︎ Store foods properly
▪︎ Trust your senses — not just the date

Reducing food waste supports both your wallet and the environment.
