Can lifestyle changes shrink a hiatus hernia?

Many people are advised to make dietary changes, lose weight, or adjust certain habits to help manage their symptoms. But can these measures actually reduce the size of a hiatus hernia?

In this reel, I discuss the role lifestyle modifications can play and address a common misconception about hiatus hernias.

Weight loss injections are reshaping obesity treatment in Australia - but they are often misunderstood as a quick fix.

Under medical supervision, patients can typically achieve 10–23% total body weight loss over 2–3 years, depending on their health profile, lifestyle, and treatment plan.

These medications work by regulating appetite and blood sugar through GLP-1 pathways, helping reduce hunger and increase fullness. However, they do not cure obesity, and stopping treatment commonly leads to weight regain.

Key points to understand:
✔ Results vary based on starting weight, metabolism, and consistency
✔ Long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle changes
✔ Medical supervision is essential for safety and dose adjustment
✔ Some patients benefit most from combining medical and surgical approaches

While highly effective for many, weight loss injections require a long-term commitment and realistic expectations.

If you’re considering treatment, the most important step is understanding all your options and choosing an approach tailored to your health needs and goals. To explore what’s right for you, book a consultation with Dr Manju today.

That burning feeling in your chest after eating?

Most people think they know what's causing it... but they're often wrong.

Acid reflux is one of the most common digestive complaints, yet there's still a lot of confusion about why it happens in the first place.

In this reel, I explain what's really going on and why understanding the cause matters.

A persistent cough is one of the most common - and most misdiagnosed - symptoms I see in my practice.

It’s often assumed to be acid reflux, but that’s not always the full story - and even when reflux is suspected, it still needs proper investigation to confirm whether it’s actually the cause.

Chronic cough can have multiple underlying causes, and if the diagnosis is off, symptoms often continue despite treatment.

If it’s been ongoing and not improving, it may be worth looking a little deeper with an Upper GI surgeon.

Before you blame allergies, asthma, or another lingering cold, consider this: Acid reflux could be the culprit.

Reflux doesn't always cause heartburn. For some people, the only signs are a chronic cough, throat irritation, hoarseness, or disturbed sleep.

If night-time symptoms are becoming a regular occurrence, it may be worth investigating what's really behind them.

Barrett’s Oesophagus is a condition linked to long-standing reflux (GORD), where the lining of the lower oesophagus changes over time.

Importantly, it is often a “silent” condition — with up to 40% of patients reporting no typical reflux symptoms at all.

It is also the only known precursor to Oesophageal Adenocarcinoma, a serious form of oesophageal cancer. In patients with Barrett’s Oesophagus, the risk of developing this cancer is significantly increased, by up to 25 times compared to the general population.

World Barrett’s Day this month is an important reminder that symptoms don’t always reflect risk.

If you have ongoing reflux, a history of GORD, or concerns about your oesophageal health, regular assessment with an Upper GI surgeon can play an important role in early detection and prevention.

Most people have never heard of Barrett’s Oesophagus… until it affects them.

In this reel, I break down the key risk factors and the people who should be paying closer attention to ongoing reflux symptoms.

Some risk factors may surprise you. Persistent reflux shouldn’t be ignored.

A persistent feeling of fullness or a “lump in the throat” - known as globus sensation - can sometimes be associated with GORD.

It may also occur alongside:
• Frequent heartburn
• Regurgitation or sour taste
• Hoarseness or voice changes
• Chronic cough
• Difficulty swallowing

If these symptoms are happening regularly, they shouldn’t be ignored.

Seeking medical advice from Dr Manju can help identify the cause and guide appropriate treatment options.

If you keep reaching for PPIs every time your heartburn flares up, this is something you’ll want to pay attention to. It could completely change how you think about managing your reflux.
