Mamalactea Lactation consultations, breastfeeding education and support for families. By Mariana Bigio, IBCLC. That first night at home was unforgettable. "Measures"?

My name is Mariana Bigio, and this is my story...
When my first child was born, I was lucky to have someone at my side that helped me to breastfeed him at the delivery room. The next few feedings seemed to be fine, until we came back home. He simply couldn’t latch on, so we spent the entire night crying and trying to breastfeed him. The next morning Kate, my doula, came by, and she worked the enti

re morning with me trying to latch the baby on. But he was so upset, that simply was not able to grab my breast. I didn’t know much about breastfeeding at that time, I just wanted to do it, and I was willing to do whatever it took me; it was more like a challenge to me, or probably instinct. Finally, at 3 pm we managed to latch him on for 5 minutes, only five minutes; and then, he fall for a long sleep. Three hours later, Kate called me to ask about the baby. I told her he was still sleeping “everybody here told me to let him sleep”. “Ok..., that’s not OK”, she said, “you must wake him up; pump, and give him whatever milk you can get in a syringe; and then try to latch him on”; and then, she added: “it’s almost 24 hours for your baby without any food, you’re in the border line of an emergency; so, if this doesn’t work, we’ll have to take other measures...”

Woa! I didn't know exactly what that meat, but she sounded worried... So we did exactly what she said. I pumped, and got about 2 ml of colostrum, and gave it to my baby. Right after that, I began to nurse him, and magically he latched on! From that moment, I remember myself praying and thanking G-d every time he was able to latch on and nurse, it seemed to me like a miracle. And that’s how this relationship started for good. But the most important thing that I want to highlight here is that I breastfed my child for the time I decided to do so, and no one else and nothing else interfered in my decision. As a professional in law and conflict resolution, I always thought on breastfeeding as a health science, and probably thought about that very few times in my life. Breastfeeding certainly is a woman’s choice. Yet, sadly, most women lack of enough information and support to make it, and sustain it for the time they truly want to. So, with this thought in my mind constantly, I decided to take a step forward -from being a breastfeeding mom to become a lactation educator/consultant- when I realized I was thirsty of knowledge, and I must be able to pass it on. In these industrialized formula-feeding times, breastfeeding is a woman and baby’s right. I want every woman to make a conscious choice for the sake of her children. I want to empower women in their right to feed their babies the way they believe is the best for them. Breastfeeding is the natural way to feed a baby; but ironically, it does not come so “natural” to most women. The cause of that is not just the mother; the whole society is involved in this dyad. The well-known expression from that song “it takes a village to raise a child” is true! It takes a village, a whole city, to breastfeed. Mothers need support, not only from their partners and family; they need good laws, employers, health care providers, and facilities, all committed to breastfeed. In my opinion, breastfeeding is a whole experience, it has its ups and downs, but it is definitely a privilege. Been able to feed your child, making him grow, to soothe him, and even to cure him, is such a blessing. I believe every mother should experience the joy of breastfeeding, as much as every child should receive the benefits of his own mother’s milk. That is my goal: to help every mother who wants to breastfeed, and to reach every woman I can to deliver this valuable message.

Current guidelines from the WHO, CDC, and Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine recommend discarding all human milk remaining in bottles after 2 hours after infant feeding, and one hour after if it’s formula.

A new released study conducted, tested samples of left over milk of 44 healthy infants (27 formula-fed, and 17 human milk-fed), in 2023.

This study found that leftover infant milk (BM or formula) does not have significant bacteria growth up to 8 hours in the fridge (4 C) and 4-8 hours at room temperature (20 C).

In other words, this study is showing evidence that the current recommendations might be way too conservative, and the time frames to re-offer milk to the baby may be longer.

NOTE: This preprint reports new research that has not been certified by peer review and should not be used to guide clinical practice yet. BUT, it’s a first and very inspiring step forward!

In our Western society, moms struggling with breastfeeding is quite common. But some things are NOT normal.

🆘When is it time to look for help?

✨ If you feel pain while nursing.
✨ If your baby is struggling to latch.
✨ If your baby always seems hungry right after feeds.
✨ If your baby isn’t gaining enough weight well.
✨ If your baby’s not having enough wet and dirty diapers per day.

These are signs that feeding may need support.
Not things you should assume they’re ’normal’ and the earlier you get help, the easier breastfeeding can become.

Exclusive pumping can be an incredible way to feed your baby, but it often comes with challenges that many people don’t talk about.

Hours spent attached to a pump, worrying about output, washing parts, building a freezer stash, figuring out fl**ge sizes, and trying to balance it all with work and family life can feel overwhelming.

This is definitely a full-time job that nobody taught us about 😅

That’s why I designed a special session all dedicated to navigate pumping struggles, and help you build the perfect plan for you and your family.

Because we simply didn’t born knowing these things, and new moms don’t have enough time to figure this out alone. In our ‘Exclussive Pumping Session’ you’ll learn everything you need to know in just one hour, and everything tailored for you.

Are you experiencing pumping challenges?
Let’s talk 📲 I want to hear about it.

Many moms worry that their milk supply has suddenly disappeared because their breasts feel different or their baby is behaving differently.

But in many cases, these changes are actually signs that breastfeeding is working exactly as it should. 🤍

✔️ Soft breasts don’t mean you don’t have milk. As your baby frequently feeds, and your body adjusts to your baby’s needs, your breasts may feel softer while still producing plenty of milk.

✔️ Babies wanting to nurse frequently is NORMAL, especially during growth spurts and cluster feeding phases. Feeding often doesn’t automatically mean your supply is low.

✔️ Pump output is NOT a reliable way to measure milk supply. Most babies are much more effective at removing milk than any pump. Not every body reacts the same to a machine.

✔️ Less leaking and less fullness are also common after the first 6-8 weeks, as the body adjust to your baby’s demand.

So what should you look for instead?

✨ Steady weight gain
✨ Plenty of wet diapers
✨ Active feeding and swallowing
✨ A baby who seems satisfied after feeds

All these ⬆️ are pretty good signs that your baby’s getting enough to grow and thrive.

But if you’re still wondering 🤔 or feeling something is not quite right, trust your instincts and ask for professional help 🆘

When it comes to breastfeeding, the rule of ‘every 3 hours’ simply doesn’t apply to your baby!
Why? Because a number of reasons:

1️⃣ Your baby is a human being and not a machine, and as no one is preventing you from eating as many times and as much as you want, your baby should not be stopped either.

2️⃣ Newborns have a tiny stomach, which means they eat small amounts at the time, and, as breast milk is rapidly digested, your baby’s stomach needs frequent refills.

3️⃣ Your body builts a good milk supply by frequent stimulation. In other words, the more and frequent suction you get, the more you will produce.

4️⃣ Babies can perfectly tell when they’re hungry or they need a quick sip by doing hunger cues. Putting hands in their mounths, sucking motions, sucking noises, rooting those are pretty good signs that they need to eat. Don’t miss them!

Keep in mind🤓 that you’ll probably get much more information about your baby by simply observing him and learning to read his signs, than staring at the clock 🕰️

And if you’re still doubting if your baby’s getting enough milk, let’s talk📲 and find out.

Soft breasts don’t mean your milk supply is low 🤍
So what does it mean? 🧐

1️⃣ Your milk supply goes through an adjustment period during the first 6–8 weeks postpartum. During this stage, it’s very common to feel overly full, heavy, or leak frequently.

2️⃣ After those first few weeks, if your baby is feeding regularly and gaining weight well, your body simply adjusts to your baby’s needs. Supply becomes more efficient and regulated according to demand.

At this point, your breasts are more used to frequent milk removal, so they often start feeling softer and lighter than they did in the beginning.

You’ve also probably become more accustomed to that early fullness and engorgement feeling. The good news? That uncomfortable stage doesn’t last forever breastfeeding usually starts feeling easier and more manageable with time ✨

⚠️ Remember: a baby who is thriving, content, and gaining weight appropriately is one of the best signs that breastfeeding is going well 💜

The secret to a great milk supply😌

SPOILER ALERT ⚠️
The secret for a great milk supply is no secret at all.

Yeap! As simple and as complicated as it sounds. You don’t need to take special teas, or eat certain foods, or undergone expensive treatments. This not skincare 😆

This is about to understand how your body works, how the milk cycle works!

We are mammals, and as every mammal in the 🌎, our body is designed to breastfeed our babies when they’re born. And our babies are designed to take the breast after birth. We have all the equipment for that.

Sooo… the main and most important thing you need to produce milk is suction. Suction on your breast! That’s the only way your body have to understand that there’s a baby here and it needs to start working. No pill, tea or food will do that.

This is pure Nature.

I know there can be challenges, but my point is, if something isn’t working the way Nature conceived it, there must be a cause.

⚠️Look for help to find it out.
