🔥 Why Is Fire Extinguisher Servicing So Important for Your Business? 🧯

A fire extinguisher is only useful if it works when you need it most.

Regular fire extinguisher servicing helps ensure your equipment is safe, accessible, in good working order and ready to use in an emergency.

For businesses, it’s not just about ticking a box. Proper servicing helps you:

✅ Protect your employees, customers and visitors
✅ Reduce the risk of fire causing serious damage
✅ Identify damaged, expired or faulty extinguishers
✅ Help meet your fire safety responsibilities
✅ Keep your fire safety equipment properly maintained
✅ Give you peace of mind that you’re prepared for an emergency

🚨 Don’t wait until you need an extinguisher to discover it doesn’t work.

Make fire extinguisher servicing part of your regular fire safety routine and keep your business protected.

🧯 Stay safe. Stay compliant. Stay prepared.

🔌 Why Does PAT Testing Matter? ⚡

Electrical equipment is something we use every day — but when was the last time you checked that it was actually safe?

PAT (Portable Appliance Testing) helps identify potential electrical faults, damaged equipment and other safety issues before they become a serious problem.

✅ Protects your staff, customers and visitors
✅ Helps prevent electrical accidents and fires
✅ Identifies damaged or faulty equipment
✅ Supports good workplace health & safety practices
✅ Gives you peace of mind that your electrical appliances are being properly checked

It’s easy to overlook that old kettle in the staff room, the extension lead under the desk or the power tool that’s been used for years — but small faults can create big risks.

Don’t wait for something to go wrong. Make electrical safety part of your routine. ⚡

🔥 Is Your Business Fire Safe? 🔥

Fire safety isn’t just about meeting legal requirements—it’s about protecting your people, your property, and your livelihood.

✅ PAT Testing helps identify faulty electrical appliances before they become a fire hazard. Many workplace fires start from damaged or poorly maintained electrical equipment, making regular testing an essential part of your safety plan.

🧯 Fire Extinguishers are your first line of defence. Having the correct extinguishers in the right locations, regularly serviced and ready to use, can stop a small incident from becoming a devastating fire.

🚨 Investing in fire safety means:
• Protecting your employees and customers
• Reducing the risk of costly downtime
• Helping meet your legal responsibilities
• Giving you peace of mind that your business is prepared

Don’t wait until it’s too late. Regular fire extinguisher servicing and PAT testing are simple, cost-effective steps that could save lives and protect everything you’ve worked hard to build.

⚠️ Faulty Electrical Equipment – A Common Fire Risk in Salons, Barbers & Small Businesses ⚠️

During inspections, one of the most common issues identified in salons, barbershops, retail premises and small commercial units is unsafe electrical equipment.

Examples regularly found include:

🔌 Damaged extension leads
🔌 Overloaded multi-plug adaptors
🔌 Mobile phone chargers left plugged in continuously
🔌 Cheap or counterfeit charging cables
🔌 Hairdryers, straighteners and clippers with damaged wiring
🔌 Trailing cables creating trip and fire hazards
🔌 Appliances showing signs of overheating or scorching

Many electrical fires start from equipment people use every single day without thinking twice about it.

Simple checks can significantly reduce the risk:

✔️ Inspect plugs and cables regularly
✔️ Avoid daisy-chaining extension leads
✔️ Replace damaged chargers immediately
✔️ Switch off unused equipment at night
✔️ Use PAT testing where appropriate
✔️ Keep combustible materials away from heat-producing appliances
✔️ Ensure staff report damaged equipment immediately

Under Scottish fire safety legislation, businesses must take reasonable fire safety measures to reduce the risk of fire and protect relevant persons.

A fire risk assessment should identify electrical ignition hazards and ensure suitable control measures are in place.

🚨 Does Your Business Have Residential Flats Above It? 🚨

If your premises has flats, maisonettes or residential accommodation above or attached, your fire safety responsibilities may be far greater than you realise.

Under Scottish fire safety legislation, business owners, landlords and duty holders must ensure that suitable fire precautions are in place to protect both commercial occupants and residents living above the premises.

Too often, serious risks are found involving:

🔥 Inadequate fire separation between shop and flats

🔥 Poorly maintained escape routes

🔥 Storage blocking common stairways

🔥 Missing or unsuitable fire doors

🔥 Faulty emergency lighting

🔥 Lack of fire detection systems

🔥 No suitable Fire Risk Assessment (FRA) in place

A fire in a commercial property can rapidly spread into residential accommodation — putting lives at risk and potentially leading to enforcement action, prosecution, business closure or devastating consequences for residents.

In Scotland, fire safety duties are enforced under the:

📘 Fire (Scotland) Act 2005

📘 Fire Safety (Scotland) Regulations 2006

If you own, manage or operate premises with residential accommodation above, now is the time to review your fire precautions and ensure your Fire Risk Assessment is suitable and sufficient.

At Goodman Fire Safety Ltd, we provide professional Fire Risk Assessments and practical fire safety guidance across Scotland.
