The difference between a tattoo that looks good in a photo and one that looks like it belongs to you is usually invisible, until you see it in person.
It’s anatomy. Movement. The way lines follow muscle instead of fighting it. Negative space that lets the work breathe. Balance that holds your eye without demanding it.
This is what bespoke means. Not just a custom design, a design built around your body specifically.
It’s still the thing I find most interesting about this job.

The appointment is the part you see. It’s also the smallest part of what actually goes into your tattoo.
Before you sit down: design time. Custom work means building something specifically for your body, your aesthetic, your skin, sketching, refining, sometimes scrapping it and starting over. Adjusting proportions. Thinking about placement and how it’ll age. After 18 years, this still takes real time. It should.
After you leave: the work doesn’t stop. Aftercare questions answered. Healing checked in on. Touch-ups considered. The quiet mental load of genuinely caring whether the thing heals well.
What you’re paying for isn’t hours in a chair. It’s years of knowledge before you were ever a client. Consistency under pressure. A design built to last. Someone who’s still thinking about your tattoo after you’ve walked out the door.
That’s the value. That’s always been the value.

Numbing cream isn’t a no from me, but it’s not a simple yes either.
There’s a lot of advice floating around online about showing up pre-numbed, and most of it skips the parts that actually matter: the way some creams change your skin’s texture, what happens when it wears off halfway through, and why your artist needs to be part of that conversation before you apply anything.
After 18 years I’ve seen it go well and I’ve seen it make a session significantly harder than it needed to be. The difference is usually preparation and communication.
