Inside a new hip joint 🦴

Ever wondered what happens during a hip replacement? Here our surgeon talks through one of the key steps: cementing the new stem into the thigh bone.

The cement has a specific working time, so there’s a moment where the team waits for it to reach the right consistency. It’s then pressurised so it fills the small spaces in the bone and gives the implant a firm hold.

The stem has markings that help the surgeon set its height. Placing it further in or further out affects leg length, so measurements are taken during the trial stage to help keep both legs as even as possible.

Once it’s in, the cement takes around 10 minutes to set.

Every patient is different, so your surgeon will talk you through what your operation involves, including the risks and recovery, at your consultation.
