Back to school, and for some, back to exam pressure

September brings routine back, but for GCSE and A-Level students especially, it can also bring a familiar knot of anxiety: new pressures, mounting expectations, and the return of that “exam year” feeling.

Sarah Baird, our Child & Adolescent Psychotherapist, works with young people to help them navigate exactly this. Sessions are child/young person-led, using a mix of talking and creative approaches, drawing, painting, clay, sand tray to help them process what they’re feeling, at their own pace.

Sarah also offers parent support sessions, because supporting a young person through exam stress often means supporting the whole family too.

-A free initial 20-minute call is available if you’d like to talk through whether this could help your child.
-After-school appointments available.

As September arrives and the back‑to‑school routine settles in, many people feel that familiar shift, new pressures, earlier mornings, busier schedules and emotional overwhelm that can quietly build beneath the surface.

For parents, teachers, students and anyone navigating change, this time of year can highlight stress, anxiety, low mood or a sense of being “out of sync.”

Eimear Divney, Integrative Counsellor at The Southdown Clinic, offers a warm, grounded and collaborative space to explore exactly these feelings. Her integrative approach blends several therapeutic models, allowing each session to be shaped around your unique needs, pace and lived experience.

Eimear supports clients with:
• Stress, anxiety and emotional overwhelm
• Low mood and depression
• Relationship or family challenges
• Life transitions and identity shifts
• Burnout and exhaustion

Treatments & Prices
• Initial 20‑minute phone/Zoom call: Free

On the 18th we will be opening the garden gate to visitors on a Friday!

On 18th September we are excited to be particpating in Englands largest heritage festival - and entrance is absolutely FREE! Join us between 11am and 3pm, wander through the garden and its historic service buildings, visit the Bedfordshire Archives in the Conservatory, have some thing delicious and a hot drink within the garden walls, or add a stop for lunch at the Woodyard Brasserie (booking reccommended). This year we will be remembering all those who have been influenced by the Walled Garden and some of the staff and volunteers of the Walled Garden Project will be dressing in the fashion of that day in order to 'tip our hat' in their direction. As we move into September and settle into back‑to‑school routines, many therapists and practitioners also feel the shift, fuller caseloads, renewed client demand, and the emotional weight that comes with supporting others through times of change.

Supervision becomes even more essential at this time of year.

At The Southdown Clinic, our Supervision & Mentoring service offers a reflective, supportive space for counsellors, psychotherapists and wellbeing practitioners. It’s a chance to pause, process, strengthen your practice and stay grounded as the new season begins.

Our supervision provides:
• A safe, collaborative space to explore client work
• Support with ethical decision‑making
• Guidance on professional development
• Emotional containment for the practitioner
• Mentoring for newly qualified therapists

Whether you’re newly qualified or highly experienced, supervision helps you stay aligned, confident and well‑supported — especially during busy periods like September. A new season is the perfect time to invest in your professional wellbeing.

As we move through the year, many people are looking for ways to reconnect with their bodies and rebuild resilience, physically and emotionally. That’s where Gwen Roby Smith, founder of Resilience Wellbeing and practitioner at The Southdown Clinic, brings something truly special.
Gwen offers Trauma Recovery Support Massage Therapy, a gentle, restorative approach designed to help clients reconnect with their bodies after stress, illness, or treatment. Her work combines compassion with clinical skill, supporting recovery after cancer treatment, injury, or emotional strain.
Each session focuses on four key principles:

Support — adapting pressure and pace to meet your needs
Connection — discovering where tension remains
Insight — reuniting body and mind
Change — introducing manageable steps for sustainable recovery

Gwen’s treatments help clients feel calmer, more grounded, and ready to move forward — whether that means easing physical tension or rebuilding emotional strength.

Resilience isn’t just recovery, it’s rediscovery. Learn more or book a session via The Southdown Clinic call on 07940 814094 or email [email protected]
