An evening with Liz Scott. Former BBC producer and reporter. Coach and counsellor. Pilgrim and author. Liz has written a book about her pilgrimage from Cornwall to Norfolk after listening to her own ‘ inner intelligence’ something that Liz, who specialises in working with older women, encourages others to do. Liz is a keen walker and recognises the power of nature and the outdoors which runs as a thread throughout her work as a women’s coach. This will be a special and fascinating evening. The old year is turning.

Already, something moves beneath the leaves.

A change in the wind.
A darkening of the earth.
The first quiet breath of autumn.

Fox knows.

She has walked this turning before,
through old tracks and fallen leaves,
through dusk and root and memory.

The ancestors knew it too.

That nothing is lost in the turning.
That every ending curls inward,
like the ancient labyrinth,
towards another beginning.

Old earth.
Old blood.
Old paths beneath our feet.

Walk softly now.
Autumn is coming.

When the mind is festering with trouble or the heart torn, we can find healing among the silence of mountains or fields, or listen to the simple, steadying rhythm of waves. The slowness and stillness gradually takes us over. Our breathing deepens and our hearts calm and our hungers relent. When serenity is restored, new perspectives open to us and difficulty can begin to seem like an invitation to new growth.

This invitation to friendship with nature does of course entail a willingness to be alone out there. Yet this aloneness is anything but lonely. Solitude gradually clarifies the heart until a true tranquility is reached. The irony is that at the heart of that aloneness you feel intimately connected with the world. Indeed, the beauty of nature is often the wisest balm for it gently relieves and releases the caged mind.
