"No pain, no gain." I genuinely think this might be one of the most damaging ideas the fitness world ever produced.

I've been teaching movement for over 30 years and I see the consequences of it every single week. People who pushed through pain because they were told that's what progress feels like. Who trained harder when something didn't feel right because stopping felt like failure. Whose bodies are now, quietly but persistently, asking for something different.

Here's what I know to be true after three decades of watching people move, and helping them move better: the body does not get stronger by being forced. It gets stronger by being understood.

Your deep stabilising muscles, the ones that actually keep you out of pain, protect your joints, and let you move freely for life, they don't respond to intensity. They respond to precision. To breath. To intelligent, consistent movement that works with your body rather than against it.

That's what Pilates is. Not a gentler version of what you were already doing. A completely different conversation with your body.

And the difference in how people feel when they make that shift? It never gets old.

There's a piece of equipment in our studio that doesn't get talked about nearly enough.

The Spring Wall.

Most people walk past it. They've come for the reformersñ they know what those do, and the wall of springs just sits there quietly being underestimated. But ask anyone who has actually worked on it, and they'll tell you something shifts.

And we just added a new class to the timetable to practice it!

Spring Wall Strong. Starting Monday 1st June, 6pm, with Sadie.

A blend of advanced mat Pilates and real strength work, using the resistance of the Spring Wall to build control, balance and whole-body connection. It's challenging. It asks something of you. But it's never about pushing for the sake of it, it's about discovering what your body can genuinely do when it's properly supported.

And the lovely Sadie is leading it. Her teaching is thoughtful, encouraging, and quietly brilliant at helping people find capability they didn't know they had.

Can I be honest with you about something that drives me quietly mad?

Pilates gets written off as stretching. All the time. And I understand why, because from the outside, it doesn't look like much. Nobody's dropping weights or dripping sweat. It looks calm. Controlled. Almost easy.

But here's what's actually happening.

When you're on a reformer, your body is learning. Your nervous system is building new connections. Your deep stabilising muscles, the ones that protect your spine and keep you moving freely for life, are switching on, often for the first time in years. Your breath, your fascia, your coordination, all of it working together as one intelligent system.

That is not stretching. That is one of the most sophisticated forms of movement training that exists.

We've been teaching this for over 30 years at Chapel Allerton Pilates. The method goes back further than most people realise, Joseph Pilates was developing and patenting his equipment in the early 1900s. This isn't new. It isn't a trend. It's a practice that works, quietly and profoundly, if you give it the chance.

When Shelly came to town!

Last month we had the absolute pleasure to welcome Shelly Power to the studio and deliver some training to our lucky teachers.

We are so proud to be the northern home for and be a part of the Polestar eco-system.

Shelly is Senior Educator and Curriculum Director for , an international presenter and examiner, and one of the most inspiring people you can have in a room. To have her here, in our studio, working directly with our teaching team was a real privilege and not something we take lightly.

This is what being part of the Polestar community means to us. Not just the qualification, not just the lineage, but the ongoing connection to the very best minds in Pilates education, and the commitment to keep learning, keep growing, and keep bringing that knowledge back to every single class we teach.

Nobody warns you how long it takes to feel like yourself again after having a baby.

Your body has done something extraordinary and now it needs the right kind of support to rebuild... slowly, intelligently, and without pressure.

Our postnatal Pilates class in Leeds with Sadie is exactly that. A small, specialist-led space where you can reconnect with your pelvic floor, restore core strength safely, and start to feel genuinely good in your body again.

Sadie is a specialist-trained Polestar Pilates teacher, a registered nurse, and a mum of three who came to Pilates after her own experience of postnatal pelvic pain. She teaches this class with the kind of understanding that only comes from living it.

But here's what our postnatal clients tell us matters just as much as the movement: the women in the room with them. Women who get it. Who are in the same season. Who become friends.
